We ordered a 2010 Ranger GT60 in October, and were told by both the Dealer and Bailey, it would be Feb/Mar 2010, before they were making them. However, we have been told today it is ready to collect. We've also spoken to Bailey today & they say its been off the production line since the beginning of November! We know its been at the dealer since before Christmas as we saw it, but thought it must be for someone else of the same name, as only 10 minutes earlier a salesman had told us that we would be assigned a number soon, and then they would have a better idea when it would arrive!!! We know it is the same van as we took a note of the CRIS no and its the same as we've been given today. Is there a way from the CRIS no that we can tell if it is really 2010 or if they're trying to give us a 2009 one. How are the CRIS numbers going to read for 2010?

I believe the the Cris numbers are name up of 17 numbers, the 2010 models could be 18?

How the 17 were read exmaple SGET000EX9CRC5000 EX= manufacturer and the 9 after this would be the year ( 2009 in this case) i presume a 2010 would read 10 hence the extra digit?

Sounds like this may be a cancelled order and they are trying to push yours forward. If you order says delivery Feb/March i would be inclined to wait until then to take dlivery if you are not desperate.

I have done this before when they wanted me to take delivery 2 months early not a lot they could do.

In 1997 i took delivery of a new Avondale. Looking under the caravan i noted that the chassis looked a bit weathered, not like my previous 1992 challenger.

I pointed this out to the dealer, but he didn't much of it, inside it looked new.

Anyway during are first trip out, i found two drilled holes in the floor, it looked like a cable had be clipped and then removed?

I was happy with the van, had bought it for a very good price, so dismissed the holes as unimportant.

on our next trip away disaster struck, the caravan became increasing unstable, requiring me to reduce speed down to 40mph, a blustery side wind was i thought to blame?

Mean while an irate white van man passenger was passing, and making wild guessers to the caravan, and mouthing tosser, or words to that effect.

I pulled over on the A1 as soon as i could, my one and only flat tyre was the problem.

I fitted the spare which luckily wasn't in the useless alko carrier, got to site, set up and took the wheel for repair.

I asked the tyre fitter what was the cause of the flat, oh he says, it was a poor patch repair!!!

Having never had it repaired, clearly someone had used it on road. The van was used, probably at a show, never did find out.

But what i did get was another brand new factory fresh van with lots of expensive extras, at NO cost to me.

So i would advise that you look very closely to ensure your van is new, and not from a SHOW.

Do you know how can we find out if it is brand new, or a show model, or if its a cancelled order. This is not our first van, but it is our first (and quite possibly our only ever) brand new van, so we've no experience of the 'stunts' a dealer might try and pull. No idea how to get to the bottom of this, and hoping we're worrying over nothing. Does seem a bit strange though that they had it, with our name on, but still made out it was on order, and hadn't been made yet. We're totally confused.

Thanks Steve, it's made us feel a bit more confident now we know its not just us. Our Dealers are being OK but don't seem very organised (there's been a few paperwork issues so far - which to be fair, they have sorted, but only because we've noticed and asked questions)

Mikey, I've been doing a bit more research and it seems that the 1-9 digits for the year code (2001-2009) have now become letters again to keep the CRIS nos as 17 digits, ie 2010 is A. The CRIS number we have been given corresponds to this information, so looks like we are OK. Going to phone CRIS tomorrow, just to double check.

Manufacturers work a year in advance so a caravan which was actually built in 2009 would still be sold as a 2010 model.

Having said that I would contact CRiS anyway to find out what they have to say.

Why not ask the dealer direct? You are spending your money so should expect a brand new product and great service from your dealer, don't settle for anything less!

Tell the dealer that you are uneasy because you were not expecting your caravan until Feb / March and seek categorical assurances that your caravan has never been a display model and has never been used at exhibitions etc.

The dealer is required by law to be truthful, if you found out later on that the dealer had not been totally honest the dealer would be liable to prosecution under the Trades Description legislation.

An honest dealer would have nothing to hide don't forget.

Check the date the 240 volt electrical system was signed off at the manufacturers. There is usually a certifcate or similar contained in the handbook pack. Same applies to the gas system. Check the tyres date of manufacture too. Quite often on the back of the fuse box / battery charger is a date of manufacture.

Now these prove nothing regarding exact date of make but they do you give you a guide.

We got our new Bailey Champagne on 1st December about 18 days early. It's supposedly a 2010 model (not that Bailey do model years anymore) but obviously built in 2009 and by checking as dustydog suggests both the gas and elctrical inspection cerificates were validated during the second week in November so I'm confident that my van is "factory fresh".

We took it to Cherry Hinton for 5 nights over Xmas and I'm happy to say that we can't find anything wrong with it at all. Next trip is next weekend to Bearstead with the grandsons to give it a full workout.

I suspect that Bailey have brought forward a lot of their manufacture for "conventional" build vans because the demand has switched towards the Pegasus and so altered their schedules quite drastically

I think Baileys changed their model release back a few months 3 or 4 years ago, best time to release new model vans in the summer when more people are interested and get the march on the other manufacturers

I have never understood the caravan industry.

To me if a caravan is built in 2009, then its a 2009 model.

The other thing i don't like, is producing caravans in the cold part of the year, such things as mastic, work much easier when applied warm.

Our caravan was delivered late may to order, not a sign of a leak, coming up to 6 years.

R said "We ordered a 2010 Ranger GT60 in October, and were told by both the Dealer and Bailey, it would be Feb/Mar 2010, before they were making them"

R how are you getting on? You do not have to take the caravan currently available if it is not what you were told above.

However you may feel there is nothing wrong with the one on offer so maybe some discounts could be in the wind??

Just to chear you up the Ranger and GT60 are due to be replaced later on this year with a Pegasus body shape, as is just happening to the Pagaent with the Olympus. It will therefore have little affect if yours is registered in 2009 or 2010 when you come to sell in a few years time as there is no change in Ranger/GT60 specification.

We've been told by CRIS that everything appears in order, regarding model year etc. So are feeling a bit more settled about this van now.

Seems its the inefficiency of our dealer that's causing much of the problem. Instead of telling us our 'van was being made earlier than expected, they were still telling us that we could expect it Feb/Mar when we called in just after Christmas - when in fact it was already in their yard, we saw it, it even had our name on it!!! We assumed it must be for someone else of same name. Must have been there since before Christmas as we were there within half hour of them opening on their first day back after Christmas. We know its definitely the same van as the wife took a note of its CRIS number, just in case. Don't think they know we saw it, probably don't know themselves it was there, they're so slow. God knows how long they've actually had it as Bailey have told us it came out of production at the beginning of November!

Think we only found out about it now, as I phoned them with a query about some paperwork they'd sent us. They'd told us they had sent it before Christmas but it never appeared - until this Monday, by which time it was out of date! The postmark says they'd actually posted it on 6 January. They must of meant it was posted before next Christmas?!! It was during this phonecall that totally out of the blue, the Salesman asked when I was going to collect it as he thought it was there. If I hadn't rang them, it looks like it could've been Feb/Mar before they'd got around to telling us.

Just hope we don't have any problems, as they're not proving to be the quickest at sorting things.

As far as the Rangers/GT60 being replaced, that doesn't bother us, were not too keen on the look of the Pegasus (maybe it will grow on us), and are still very happy with our choice. More important that our van is a factory fresh, DEFECT FREE, 2010 model, that hasn't been used at a show etc., because that is what we've ordered/paying for.

We will still be seeking categorical assurances from them that all is above board. They'll also be told that their service so far is frankly a bit crap - the wife won't be able to stop herself from telling them that - and also that we will expect MUCH better from them if there's any problems with the van.

Thanks to all for your advice and views. We'll keep you posted.

Another reason for early delivery is that they are trying to get all delivered before the VAT rises so that we can get em

a bit cheaper.

If you send an e-mail to Bailey's helpline quoting the VIN number they will tell you exactly what month your van was manufactured.

Hi R

From what you now say I'd be quite happy I'm getting what I ordered. Bailey have always manufactured in batches . Our 2008 Senator was made in the first week of november 2007 and we collected it two weeks later. It is still recorded in the documentation that it is a 2008 model.

More to the point you will have one of the last GT60s made . I believe that gives some kudos to its pedigree.

If you search on this forum you will see dozens of tips on what to expect from the dealer at the point of collection. Make sure he show you everything working and I mean EVERYTHING.

Cheers

I think that vans these days are built in modern factories that probably have heating!
