BAILEY ROOFLIGHT

I have a Bailey Pageant Champagne 2002 and the Remi rooflight has cracked by the hinge. Can anyone advise where I could get a replacement dome/perspex. I have had on order for last two weeks with my local caravan dealer but he now tells me that Bailey are on shutdown until 14th August.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Nigel

If you Google "caravan breakers" - you will find a list of caravan salvage firms that may be able to help.

My only other suggestion is a tempory fix using a plastic solvant glue like the stuff we used as kids with our Airfix kits. However if the hinge has broken off I doubt that sucha repair will be sufficiently strong enough. May be worth a try tho'.

You need a glue that will disolve the plastic of the dome so that the repair is more like a weld than simply gluing it together.

Hi Nigel,

Acrylic requires a specialist solvent glue - something from the WELDON range will do a perfect job.

WELDON and similar solvent glues are available in a range of "thicknesses":

1. If the original acrylic parts are still a perfect fit - then use the thinest glue - Weldon 3 or Weldon 40

2. If the parts don't really fit, then use one of the gap filling solvent glues

3. If you need to bridge missing pieces, then one of the two part acrylic glues will do the job - these chemically react to create new acrylic material.

And you need to take care using these glues - follow the instructions on the safety data sheet. They will bond skin instantly (wear thin gloves - like those on fuel station forecourts) and you may be sensitive to the solvent fumes.

The "welded" material will be as strong as the original part - but don't leave any cracks untreated - they will start a new crackline.

Nigel,

One tip on stopping cracks running an further, is to drill a small hole at the very end of the crack. This rounded hole will stop the crack spreading, especially if you use the recommended sealers as suggested.
