Battery Charging

Hi All

This is probably something that Rob-jax can answer.

I have to park my caravan hard up against the house wall which prevents me from getting to the battery box. I can't take the battery off the 'van to charge it as I need it to power the motor mover to get it against the wall. As it is recommended to charge the battery using an external charger I am in a bit of a predicament.

One thought that I had was to make a small hole throgh the battery box from inside the 'van and pass a pair of wires through and re-seal the hole. These wires could then be fastened to the respective battery terminals and connect the ends of the wires in the 'van to a battery charger ( I always connect up a mains cable before parking the 'van). Needless to say, the wires in the 'van would need to be insulated at the ends, possibly by using terminal block.

Is this feasible or are there any other ideas ?

Regards

Hi John,

No reason why not. But as an idea, rather than simply passing a wire through the battery box - why not buy a bulkhead connector from Maplin or similar company?

This suggestion arises from our CTEK charger, which comes with a 1 foot fly lead fitted with an insulated connector, and a separate cable and matching connector on the CTEK itself.

For the connection to the battery, crimp a couple of crimp connectors onto the 10 Amp rated wires - with the right spade or ring ends to fit your battery - then solder to the bulkhead connector...

And in continuation, a 2-pole SpeakOn (loudspeaker) connector is robust enough, and will easily handle both the charging current and the voltage - and at around

The main 12v power cables will run from the battery box to the 12v control box - I just fitted my CTEK connector in the bed box by the 12v control box - the battery box remains fully sealed.
