Battery Red Hot.

Can anyone advise me please I have recently purchased a 2007 Lunar Quasar 525.When I connect the van to the mains the leasure battery after a few hours becomes red hot the dealer says that the battery is the problem and I should take it to him for checking the battery is only 3 yrs old is this likely to be my problem? Also the fridge does not work although the the dealer has had the van for 3 weeks and said he had it working. The control panel lights up it says its on mains but never gets cool the dealer is now saying he will contact electrolux direct and in turn they will contact me is this normal practice im beigining to lose confidence in the dealer advice will be welcomed.

I just got a new battery after two years as the old battery seed to be let me down a lot as I was use it for a motor mover.

Gilbert,

If the battery gets hot, that's usually because one or more of the six internal cells has died via an internal short circuit (a piece of lead plate has broken away and jammed itself between two plates).

The maximum voltage that this battery can now achieve is 10V (each cell is 2V), and the circuitry in the charger misreads this as a "flat battery" - also around 10V - and it tries to pump maximum charge into the battery. This makes the battery very hot.

So the first step is to replace the battery. If the charger is at fault then the problem will reappear immediately, but that's unlikely.

Fridge not working.

Assuming that you have the caravan level and not on a sloping drive - because fridges need to be level within 5 degrees - that's about 6" front to back on a mid sized van - or they won't work.

If the fridge is faulty internally, the dealer is doing the right thing by contacting Electrolux - your contract is with the dealer and they have the responsibility of fixing any warranty issues with the supplier of the caravan or with the appliance manufacturer.

I had a hot battery last October, and a new battery this season did the trick. I'd had the old one since 1998, so I'm not complaining. Thanks for the explanation Robert - I understand what was happening now.
