Being new to caravanning in 2008, it never crossed my mind that we had bought a short term solution. Surely we can't be the only family with children who are over 5' tall and growing. In our current 'van, a Bailey Moselle 2004, the bunk length is only 5'6", this is too short for one and only just long enough for the other.

I've already made the reluctant decision to upgrade to a bigger caravan, but that's when the problem starts. My frustration stems from the lack of secondary bed sizes on advertisements for used 'vans. The info on the main double is always present, but apart from mentioning their existence, there's no measurements given for bunks/singles. Manufacturer's web sites only give data for the current models. Please can someone start advertising used caravans with all the data included?

Try going to the manufacturers web site or even phoning them up. Its not hard however to work out that a 6'6 x 4'6 bed made up at the front will only make up 4'6 long singles unless you've got a front box where singles can get there heads or feet past the locker (but manufactures wil usually tell you that it can be made up as tow singls or a double. Most rear dinettes are usually too short to make up two decent singles but will make a decent 4'6 x 6'6 or longer double. The Bailey brochures have all the info on bed sizes but leave it up to you to work out some of the obvious.

As a family of four we had the same problem and had to rule out the 4 berth side dinette version completly due to the short bunks.

We looked at 6 berths with end or side bunks and then discounted them because of weight restrictions on the top bunk of around 10 stone (not much good for growing teenage lads). Also they seemed to have one bunk with plenty of space and the other with a lot less headroom....arguments over who goes where???

We found a 5 berth with a dinette at the rear which we use as a double and the lads use the front seats as two singles, which which is fine unless they grow much over 6ft. When they no longer come with us this layout would be a very flexible 2 berth with the option to have visitors.

If you decide on a model maybe someone here will have the details of the bed sizes in their van handbook. When we were looking Lunar had very genourous beds although we couldn't find what we wanted at a suitable price.
