You mention Gent yet also talk about preferring the French-speaking part of Belgium. As Gent is in the Flemish part of the country, which of the two applies? We have stayed at the campsite at Oudenaarde near Gent while passing through Belgium on our way to the UK or back to Germany several times and were quite happy there. However, we have also stayed at the Vaux Hall site in French-speaking Mons a little further south and that's quite convenient because it's in a park right in the middle of town.

We have stayed at Camping Blaarmeersen which is on the edge of Gent and found it a perfectly acceptable campsite with reasonably size pitches. There is a bus stop not far from the entrance and the bust goes into the Centre of Gent. Gent has some very impressive buildings in the Centre so well worth a visit. If you wanted to you also get the train from there to Brussels.

Michael. I am sure it will be good news for GHENT when we leave but bad news for t"other place. How many horsemen took the good news anyway?What was the good news?I agree about the buildings in Ghent as I spent a few weeks there for the company I worked for. Very strange being a lone woman at the hotel.When I went for breakfast all the men stood up!!HOW GALLANT!! That was a lifetime ago.They would all rise and run for the door these days!!!!!!The reason I prefer the Walloon region is that I cant manage Flemish and French is just OK.

I think you'll find that most people in the Flemish part of the country speak English, so that wouldn't be a criterion for me to choose French speaking Belgium.

In answer to your question:

"I sprang to the stirrup, and Joris, and he;

I galloped, Dirck galloped, we galloped all three;

As regarding the reason for their journey, Robert Browning was deliberately obscure, but when I was at school, two lifetimes ago, we postulated that it was because of Wellington's victory at Waterloo.

We stayed overnight in a hotel in the centre of Ghent in 1991 on the way back from a motoring tour of Holland. It's a lovely city and someday we will make a return trip.
