Hi all. I have recently changed caravan storage which is now outside. The van has been stored inside since new therefore not really taken much cleaning.

Up until now I have used Auto Glym shampoo as used on my car but I'm starting to notice it doesn't really remove black streaks etc.

1) Which product or methods do you recommend to keep van looking good.

2) Does anyone have any other tips for keeping clean when storing outside? We use for weekends through winter so a cover could be too much hassle.

Thanks in advance, Dan.

Hi Don

I cleaned my van today using car shampoo. I bought a long handled soft brush (which you attach a hose to). Did a sterling job even if I say so myself.

I use black streak remover for, well, black streaks.

I did buy the overwintering stuff but it's still in its container having never been used. But that's no good to you as you are using yours all the time.

When you site your van and its not in use, lower one end, that will stop water pooling on the roof.

Try not to site the van under a tree.

Thanks Lisa I'll remember that next time I park up. There's no trees around and the ground is slightly sloping forward so a few turns of jockey wheel should be enough slope.

I've always used the fenwicks stuff, caravan cleaner in a garden pressure sprayer, panel at a time spray on agitate with a brush / sponge, rinse of with another garden pressure sprayer with fenwicks bobby dazzler, when whole van is done for the winter months you can use the sprayers to give a coat of the over wintering fluid, you can still use the van at anytime as the coating is near invisible, not a bad idea to leave a coating on the roof helps to stop the dreaded purple bird crap stains, ....Mark

I have allways used fenwicks on my vans, its very good at removing black streaks and gives a nice finnish, i do occasionally spray it with fenwicks bobby dazzler too but the main thing is twice a year i polish the van with auto glym super resin polish and a top coat of auto glym gold finnish, this results in a super smooth paint finnish which most dirt can not stick to so the van is really easy to clean.

Its a lot of work but in my opinion well worth it esspecially when people ask me how i like the new van and i tell them its now 2 years old !.

nearly forgot, apparently if your a bailey owner you can't use fenwicks anymore as bailey claim it damages the front and rear ?. i think they just need to make a better panel as it affects no other make ?.

Yeah?

At least you won't find front panel cracking problems with a Bailey such as you will experience with many other brands!

I also use Autoglym polish on my van, but have been weary of non-car shampoos due to the detergents in other products. Is Fenwicks detergent free and not affect the polish?

My last three vans have all been Baileys and I've used Fenwicks on all of them without problem. Bailey have made no official mention of not using Fenwicks, their advice in handbook is to use car shampoo. I believe they did have a bit of a "disagreement" with Fenwicks some time ago. This wasn't helped by the owner of a rival cleaner manufacturer who appeared to be spreading rumours on internet forums that Bailey owners would have their warranty invalidated if they didn't use hiks company's product. This isn't and never was the case.

fenwicks is quite a strong cleaner which is why its so good with the black streaks, as i said i polish our van twice a year so i have no problems with fenwicks removing the shine. ive not used any other cleaner on my vans so i cant compare other than to say it removes streaks a lot easier than car shampoo.

panels cracking was the very reason bailey apparently adviced people not to use fenwicks !. they had a very serious problem a few years ago with both front and back panels cracking.

off memory rob the disagreement was fenwicks threatening legal action against bailey for blaming them for the front panels cracking when in reality it was a cheap product that had failled and over stressing of the panel, avondale had the same problem but graciousley accepted responsibility instead of trying to blame a third party.

the entire saga is in the archives on this site some where.

Hi, I cleaned and dried my 'van this morning then applied Fenwicks Overwintering. Unfortunatly there was a heavy shower shortly afterwards.

Question:

1. Will the overwintering coat have been washed off as it didn't get the 4/5 hour recomended drying time?

2. Can I just apply another coat?

3. Do I have to wash the 'van and start again?
