We are wanting to buy some flooring for our awning. There seems to be lots of different kinds, so I am confused as to which one will be best for us. We have twin toddler grandchildren so need something that will make the awning like an extra room for them to play in. Obviously, they will be spending a lot of time sitting on the floor playing, so I could do with some advice as to what will be the best. We are new to caravanning so any advice would be welcome!

Hi Carol.

If your touring on grass sites, they insist on using breathable ground sheets which preserve the grass.

However at some DIY's you can find interlocking foam mats about 600mm square and about 1 cm thick. or even back packers foam bed pads. These would be usefull so that when the kids tumble they will have a soft landing.

I would avoid the breathable awning carpet mat from towsure as it is made of a nylon weave which is slippy in anything except trainers. The open mesh ground sheets are fine and competatively priced there.

Have fun.

We stayed at Hamlin in Germany one year and an army officer had a permanent pitch overlooking the river

His large awning was floored with rubber safety tiles as diverted from an army school playground

They would have cost several thousand pounds to buy

That was the ultimate

But on a more helpful note its possible to buy from caravan dealers interlocking rubber awning tiles

Hi

We use a breathable ground sheet in our awning - the type you can buy in different sizes or cut off a roll at caravan dealers. We have 3 kids and have used the same type since kids were 2,3,4 years, now young teenagers, just replaced it when van was changed.

If you are on a hard standing pitch with a gravel type hard standing - then the 'gravel' can sometimes be a bit harsh on soles of feet and knees with our type of ground sheet. Grass is kinder on knees and feet but may get a bit muddy in wet weather. We use both types of pitch.
