I have got a 1986 Ace Ambassador Ghia and the exterior paintwork is getting a bit drab. The interior is in excellent condition and it tows like a dream so I don't want to get rid of it.

The question I would like to ask is what is the best paint to paint a caravan with, with a brush? I used to be a painter & decorator so painting and not leaving brushmarks I am used to.

I have been told to use two-pack but I am a bit concerned about the health risk of that particular paint. Any tips would be much appreciated

Ernest,

A two-pack paint will give the best protection against UV light, water resistance, surface finsih. But they are often meant for spray application and you must wear an appropriate protective mask (at least)

Alternatively, particularly if you want to hand paint, then an "above the water-line" yacht paint such as International Toplac will be almost as good. Good water resitance, good UV protection.

Hi Ernest, You need a good quality coach finish, Try Joseph Mason or BASF paint products, we used to use Valentine oach finish for repainting caravans, great protection good float out, but sadly got took over by BASF in the 80's.

Would not recommend using two pack especially if you intend brushing. Once the hardener is added you only have a limited time to use before it hardens. I am a time served vehicle painter who has sprayed a few caravans for family and friends and the finish has been like new, also thicker coats of paint so better for polishing. Might be worthwhile getting quote from a garage.

Thanks for replies. I suppose I could try the spray but I'm a brush painter, always have been. I painted an old Knowsley Eros years ago with cellulose and it looked a treat when it was finished. I could have a look at the Toplac or BASF paint. The caravan is just going to get serviced and put away for the winter so I've got a bit of time to sort things out.

Ernest. Just a thought but a few years ago there was a type of paint brought out for brush painting cars. When it was applied there were no brush strokes on the finish. Cannot remember the name but will contact a few friends in the trade to see if they know type of paint.
