The distance is just over 500 KM or about 320 miles or so, about 300 miles of the route is motorway.

French motorways from Calais down towards Rouen is not like English frantic motorway traffic levels.

For your fisrt run with the caravan I would aclimatise to the French Road and being on the "wrong side" on the easy to use motorway rather than get into junctions and roundabouts etc firts time off. Take the motorway out of Calais and head south and plan a detou stop into Le Havre say or some other larger town / ty on route to experience the A and B roads.

French motorway driving with a caravan is easy , most brits are surprised by how little traffic they see compared to back home.

Hi Chris,

Don't worry - it's an easy drive of about 5 or 6 hours towing a caravan - which we've done many times on our way to Brittany.

Use the autoroute (tolls) from Calais to Caen, and then head across country on N roads (equivalent of UK A roads but much less traffic).

Watch out for speed cameras on the dual carriageway sections of the N roads - they are set to 110 kmh (about 68 mph) or the local speed limit.

You may want to stop in a village and buy some fresh bread - and / or a hypermarket on the outskirts of a large city for cheese / salads / bread (independent bakers are better) - and then stop at an "aire" for a outdoor lunch.

If you do stop at a hypermarket make sure you fit the tow ball lock (or one of you stay with the van) and take it off before you drive off (usually not necessary but as it's your first day it's wise to take care)
