Best Route from Grange over Sands to Berwick

I have booked a week at Meathop C&C club site at Grange Over Sands and then travelling to Chainbridge near Berwick upon Tweed. i would appreciate some advice on the best route to take, whether to go up to Carlisle and up the A7 or across the A69 to Newcastle and up the A1

Not done the exact journey but have used the A69 several times and would think it is the better route.
