He we pull with a shogun.... yea a gass guzzling 3l... we use a rear wheel mount to carry our bikes but we dont find it big enough for 4 so were also looking for a couple of roof bars to put 2 uptop....

We regularly carry four bikes on the roof of the Sorento. If you don't have a spare wheel to fit the carrier I think the roof is the best place for stability.
The caravan step also works a treat for reaching the bikes.

We now have a Toyota Landcruiser but I have only ever used roof bars for carrying up to 5 bikes. I have seen too many people struggling to get to boot/back door with them on the back and restricting the turning ability of the outfit when hitched up, not to mention the increased weight on the rear suspension. On teh roof they are out of the way until you need them, spread teh load over the whole vehicle, can be easily secured and don't interfere with the towing.

I use the Thule Proride 591's on the roof of my 4x4.
They are expensive but will last for years, have come down in price buy online as they are much cheaper.www.roofbox.co.uk.
Good thing about these carriers is you tighten up the frame clamp at roof bar level.

we bought some from halfords in there advanced range but they didnt fit because of the spoiler on the rear of the santa fe.
also it said you have to take them off everytime you take the bike off.
which make and models do you have?.

The only reason to remove roof bars when not in use is to avoid unneccessary increase in fuel consumption due to the additional aerodynamic drag that they produce.
