We have always used a roof carrier for our bikes, but we have changed cars and it means buying another carrier so since my husbands disabled I thought about a bike rack that clips on to the spare wheel at the back. I seen a CM08 hopkirk the depth is 76.5 cm. (we tow a bailey provence with a mitsubishi shogun) Can a rear mounted bike rack be used while towing and if so how much clearence is needed for safe turning?

Hi,

Not too sure about your setup but we have a Hyundai Santa Fe with a towbar mounted cycle carrier. So simple and quick to put together. We havn't used it with the van simply because of the noseweight.

Afternoon Janet,

Have a look at Towsure's website as they have 4 or 5 different makes of bikes racks for 4x4's with or without spares wheels on the back, pretty reasonable prices as well.

Thanks

Rob.

Hi Janet,

We used a bike carrier hung on the back of the spare wheel of our Nissan Terrano.

The biggest problem we had was not space for the van as it was turning - it never got near the bikes. The problem was clearance above the jockey wheel. In the end, I used to drop the jockey wheel out of the A frame once we were hitched up, and carry it in the boot. A bit of a faff, but at least we were able to have the use of our bikes when we were on holiday. So my advice to you is to try to determine how high the bottom of the rack/bikes will be and compare that with the height of your jockey wheel when it is raised up.

We no longer use the rack as we changed cars about 18 months ago to a Volvo that doesn't have a spare wheel, so we use roof top carriers now. This all reminds me I must try get rid of the bike carrier designed for the spare wheel as it is taking up room in the garage.

Cheers
