Hi, can anyone recommend a good cleaner to remove those unsightly black streaks down the side of my caravan. I have tried Fenwicks black streak remover which you spray on and leave for a couple of minutes but it didn't do anything, thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi Craig,

I used Fenwicks and it did the job ok, maybe it has to do with the age of the streak. Ours is a relatively new van so that why maybe, it worked ok ?? The July or August issue of PC Mag had an article on polish, and I think it mentioned black streak remover. I will look it up tomorrow and let you know.

Val & Frank

ps They are a pain, don't know why Swift/Bailey etc can't get around this problem !!!!!

I found that 1000 grit sandpaper removes the black streak easily especially if mounted on an electric sander and of course if yopu do the whole van it will never be a problem again and the van will look like an Airstream that retail at around

Hi Val & Frank, our van is a brand new Bailey only 2 months old so they have not been on that long, thanks for your reply, Craig.

Hi craig

I use either tar remover by carplan from any motorist shop or thompsons upvc restorer from B&Q a bit cheaper than fenwicks and even tried that eco spray from any supermarkets.

Anyone remember `Green Genie`?

Was biodegradeable, non-toxic,non-caustic and brilliant on caravans, cars, windows,UPVC, upholstery etc. Was tested by P.C in late eighties if i remember.

Anyway, used neat on black streaks just lifted them off, and didn`t strip the polish. It hasn`t been available for a couple of years now, but anyone with a `Costco` card can get their version which is about six quid for 4 litres, and at a couple of squirts to a bucket of water will last longer than me.

Brilliant, and i won`t use anything else as all the other stuff I`ve tried (garage full) isn`t as good and is usually caustic based.

Don't bother with specialist products - just use baby wipes, they get anything off the caravan (don't know what they do to a baby!!). Seriously though, they are extremely effective and very cheap in Poundland (obviously

Sorry to be pedantic, Joyce, but the stuff from from Costco at six quid a pop for four litres, using two squirts from the (free) spray to a gallon of warm water is about a zillion times cheaper.

I, and my neighbours have used it for years, and I`m telling all about it `cos it`s the dogs, not because I`ve got a `vested interest` which devalues your opinion somewhat!

I actually meant to post this as a reply, not a comment. Doh!

Hi Angus

Be as pedantic as you like....my mistake. I read your comment and saw `has not been available for a couple of years` so those of us without a garage full might not be able to use it.

I should have read the comments more closely although I did not say it was cheaper than ALL products mentioned just some of the other products mentioned. Have to admit was looking at the comment before mine.

We are all entitled to our opinions.

Hi Moderator 3

Please can you advise why you deleted my reply to Craig to try Kemdirect Shampoo to solve his black streaks.

I did not write the comment as an advert. I advised how good it was similar to the other comments still on the thread and I only put the www on so he could check the product and feel happy about it if he would like to use it. It is not my site but a Dutch site.

Can you be absolutely sure that very time someone says " I use a certain product" "or this product is great" that they have absolutely no vested interets in it?

There have been many comments from people on the forum about their products and in a much more direct way than I write.

Some even comment directly on their caravan site or their club or the like.

All the comments on this thread which mention a commercial product are in their own way advertising it and recommending it.

So why was my comment not allowed?

Joyce

Hello Craig

I simply use car shampoo (any brand) to remove the stubborn black streaks - use the shampoo neat - tip the liquid onto a damp cloth (not a sponge)and the marks simply wipe away - it doesn't damage any paintwork. If there are any serious marks, i.e. ground in dirt on the front of the caravan after towing, I use Mer (in a blue bottle) available in most caravan shops and Halfords, again, apply neat on a damp cloth and dirt disappears!!

If you use Mer, you can buff the paintwork up to a brilliant shine. Happy cleaning!
