Blocked Gas Regulator ?

Having gone away in our 2006 Elddis Superstorm this last weekend i came across a problem that has never appeared before. In that i came to light the gas BBQ but did not have enough pressure of propane gas for it to light sufficently (or so i thought) i assumed that the gas cylinder must have been empty or very nearly so i changed over to a new cylinder and this initially seemed ok. However the gas gradually over 30 mins lost all pressure and the BBQ went out i went in and tried the cooker only to find that it lit before again losing pressure and going out. I now cannot light any gas appliance inside the van i have checked for leaks and there are none. I suspect that the bulkhead regulator is blocked has any one else had similar experience with this type of bulkhead regulator and if so what was the solution? I should add also that i was using a standard Calor gas bottles as i have for over 10 years I recall seeing an article in Practical Caravan some time back on faulty regulators but i cannot recall which issue of the mag. Any helpwould be greatly appreciated as we have our main summer holiday coming up in about 4 weeks.

Darren, this is a very common problem and is covered by warranty with your supplying dealer who will change the regulator and fit a mod kit if it has not already been done.He should also change the pigtail as well.

The reg should be mounted as high as possible in the gas locker with a 90degree elbow on the outlet and the correct length pigtail to ensure a drop away from the reg to the cylinder to try and avoid the blocking by an oily residue.

As it is something which involves breaking a gas union, it must be done by a competent fitter.

Hi Damian,

I had this happen in France last year but somehow (and Luckily!!)it cleared itself.

If it happens again is there any 'On Site' fix?

I have read(not sure if ok) that if you have an old type reg which you attach to the cylinder and the other end of the rubber hose you attach the BBQ brass connector and plug it into the van so that you are connected via the now external cylinder via the bbq point. Not ideal but if you are on site especially abroad(the only time that you get the problem)it might keep you going.
