Booking a ferry

Hi,

When booking a ferry and it asks for the caravan sizes is it with the A frame.

Also when booking when is the best time to book it? now or nearer the time of departure.

Thanks,

M.H.

Hi M.H.

The size they are looking for is the shipping length, the overall length of the caravan incuding the A frame.

Re when to book, you can sometimes get a cheap price for booking early but that generally means earlier in the year than now. If you leave it to nearer your sailing date you may run the risk of not getting a berth especially if you are planning to go peak time. Might depend on the route also.

I'd book now - a couple of weeks ago there were some good deals with Norfolk Line from Dover to Boulogne, but even when we're going in May some of the sailings were already full for caravans.

If you're going in the school holidays then I'd definitely book as soon as you can.

Following on to Rob-T's message some ferry companies offer caravan goes free days - one of the reasons we use D.F.D.S. from N. Shields, the other being it saves the hack to the south coast. Depends where you are going at the other end though.

Most ferry companies seem to work like budget airways the closer to departure you get the more you want the crossing so you pay for the benefit of being squeezed in "at the last minute".

Regarding the measurements as most spec sheets will say "Shipping Length" is exactly what it is: nose to tail measurement.
