Dear All

Pleas help. When we bought out new van we asked if it was OK to use BP Gaslight cylinders as we have 2 cyldinders and were told we could. However when we collected on Friday someone else at the dealer said we shouldn't use Gaslight. What do you think? is it OK or is there a better alternative

Many thanks

John

BP Gas Light is propane gas sold in a lightweight cylinder similar to the Calor Gas Lite range. However the cylinder sizes are different in both physical size, amd the amount of gas they hold. This can be either 5 or 10 kg of gas. You can use BP Gas Light if you have the correct bulkhead 30 mb regulator and the corect propane hose. Alternatively, if you have an older van you can use the old cylinder moounted 37 mb regulator and hose.

The main issue I gather is the larger physical size of the cylinder in that it is fatter and may not fit the location in the front locker. You will have to check this yourself. The other 'complaint' was the reduced number of outlets but as Homebase stock them this has increased significantly.

Apart from that i do not know of any other adverse issue, but others may know more.

We have used BPGaslight ever since in was introduced and never a problem fitting it in our Coachman 2003 Amara or our now 2005 Elddis Crusader. We fit 2 5 kilo's in OK and in the Spring one bottle lasted 8 weeks of our holiday and we are still using the 2nd bottle and have replaced the first which is ready and waiting. Cannot see the problem.

Cylinders are a bit fatter and in our case we can't fit the 10Kg bottle in as its too tall so use the 5Kg. Most new caravans will take the BP bottle. What make is your caravan? Best bet is to borrow a bottle and see if it goes in. Our 2006 Abbey was already fitted with grey plastic mounting plates on the floor which will take either standard calor or BP light bottles. You will need a connector for the BP bottle, its different to the standard butane and propane fittings. We use butane hoses with adaptors that came from Gaslow, but I think a lot of dealers have them now. As someone else has said, we now get replacement cylinders frtom Homebase, or our local plant hire company gets them in for us.

We have used BP light in our last van and our current van.

In our 2006 Ranger Series 5 the locker floor did not have the exact indent for the bottles, but we just had the securing straps raised on the bulkhead and they were secured fine. From 07 Rangers had an amended locker floor that took the BP bottles with no problem at all.

Thanks for your replies. I'm sure our cylinders will physically fit. The prob was / is that a salesman told my missus that BP gaslight was a "dirty" gas. She's now got that into her head and insists we get something else

Thanks again

John

What a ridiculous thing for a salesaman to say, unless he was trying to sell you something else that is! I would be interested in hearing the evidence this remark is based on.

BP Gas Light is propane and is no different to any other propane sold in bottles or in bulk. I have yet to read any negative comments on its use (other than it being slighly harder to find than calor gas) either on this forum or any other.

Don't be put off using it just because of one persons opinion.

John, as Paulus says, I can only assume that the salesman works for a rival gas company, we have been more than happy with BP light and as the bottles are translucent you can see how much gas you have left.
