Brake Drums Hot

The brake drums on the off-side of my 655 twin axle new caravan get hot after towing for only 10 to 15 miles. The near side remain cool. The workshop has looked at the brake system twice and it is still as bad. I have observed myself that the brakes are quite free when jacked up.

What do you think? Does anyone who has a twin axle have a similar problem? Should I worry about it?

Whilst your wheels turn freely when jacked up, it could be that under towing conditions one pair of wheels is being braked sooner/harder than the other.

Hi AllanH

I had this problem with my new Lunar Lexon EW twin. The dealer made an adjustment to the main brake rod,as he thought it was a bit too slack. I dont think he touched the individual adjustments to each drums and this resulted in some improvement.

After a few more trips out the problem has now gone away. I think they do require a period of time to bed in properly.

Regards Jim

Hi is the 655 on an Alko chassis?I had brake problems on my Elddis (BPW chassis) one side of the vans drums were getting really hot after the van had just been serviced. They came to my home next day and readjusted the drums aprox 5 times with me driving off for a few miles in between adjustments. It was areal pain. When they jacked the van up and spun the wheels they spun freely ,but different matter when towing.

Hi, Mikey, Thanx for your input. My chassis is an Alko, but the problem seems identical! I take that yours was fixed, eventually. Was it just brake drums which caused the problem?

Hi AllenH

They readjusted them each time i returned from the test until the drums were cool enough to touch, doesnt give great confidence in the serviceing but i have had no problems since.

Hi Allan

Just had my van serviced, a 2004 Abbey Spectrum on an Alko chassis, and the workshop noticed that I had the breakaway cable cliped to an eyelet on my removeable towbar. Alko have told them that the cable could have the potential to apply the brakes when cornering and could cause the brakes to overheat and possibly disintergrate. They are therefore recomending to fasten it around the towball. Another reason for that is that if it is just cliped to a pigtail or eyelet if the caravan does become detatched the clip part of the cable could separate from the cable thus not applying the caravan brakes. If it is fastened around the towball it will tighten up more on itself if the caravan does become detatched therefore applying the caravan brakes. It now opens up that debate again of where to attatch the breakaway cable.

Thanks for your response, sorry about the delay, I have been having the brakes reset and testing. All OK now, but you have given me something else to think about now. AllanH.
