Brakes

Hi all, can anyone help me with some advice on brakes please, for the last eight years I've had my caravan serviced but this year I'm going to do my own service as I've taken a wage cut of nearly £7000 a year so money is an issue at the moment, my caravan is a 1991 ABI Sunstar Award, I need advice on where I can get new brake shoes if it needs them or any other parts it might need, any help would be great please.

Much depends on what kind of hub nut is used as to whether or not you need extra tools.
If it has hub nuts secured by castellated nut and split pin then an ordinary socket set is all that is required.
If it has the euro hub nut, with the infamous One Shot Nut, then you will need a torque wrench capable of 290Nm to set the new nut.
Most parts can be obtained from Western Towing as one example.

Nice one Damian, thanks a lot mate, we're going to our caravan this Sunday to finish off our front end renovation, I'll pull off the wheel trim and see which hub nut we've got on ours, thanks again mate.

If you cannot establish which you have by looking, take a pic of the hub nut cap, be that a grease cap or dust cap, and post it and I will be able to advise.

If you are going to do a lot of your own maintainance then a good buy might be the Haynes Caravan Manual which is very good for most jobs. You can get it in Halfords and probably internet sites.

Since your van is a 1991 build the hubs you have fitted will be the adjustable type with the castellated nut and split pin. The Euro axle wasn't introduced until 1994 at the earliest. Even the Leda Quantock we bought new in 1995 had the adjustable bearings.

I have an early edition of John Wickersham's Caravan Manual and the Euro axle isn't mentioned then.
