Hi just registered posted this on somebody elses question sorry, but try again.

I bought a brand new Bailey Senator Louisiana in June, first time out the caravan came of the tow bar, the cable snapped and didn't apply the handbrake, the caravan then ran into the back of the car causing damage to the front of the caravan. I have been towing a caravan for 26yrs and never had an accident. I am in the process of complaing to the dealer as the safety was not fit for purpose. Has anybody else had this happen?

Terry,

I assume with 26 years experience, that you hitched up correctly ?

The only reason I ask is that I had a phone call from my wife at lunchtime and she mentioned that she was near the entrance to our local Caravan Club site (Grange - Durham) earlier today, when a gentleman towing a Bailey Pageant was leaving the site.

The access road has a left turn onto a short sliproad, which joins a 200 metre stretch of dual carriageway, just prior to a Motorway Interchange over the A1 Motorway.

As this gentleman took the left turn, his car went left and his caravan continued straight on, blocking the dual carriageway.

Fortunately no one was hurt and no damage occurred, as the breakaway worked correctly and his caravan stopped before hitting the central reservation.

Apparently the gentleman has 30 years caravan towing experience and is adamant he hitched up correctly.

I don't know the age of his caravan, but it may be worth keeping an eye on this subject to see how common this is and whether there is a fault with the hitches.

I dread to think what could have happened if he had travelled a short distance further and made the Motorway before the van detached.

In any event, If you hitched up correctly and your breakaway did not apply your caravan brakes then you may have cause to complain, especially on a new caravan where you would "expect" everything to work correctly.

Thanks Ken

I did couple up correctly, with the new alco system if the green button is showing then the connection is supposed to be secure, plus I live on a farm and have to travel 200yds down a rutted track before I reach the road, you would think that if the van had not been properly connected ot wouls have come off there.
