Any suggestions appreciated

In May most campsites in France will be quiet - the French peak season is very short, usually from mid-July to mid-August. Outside those dates you should find that even the largest sites are quiet.
We travel in May and use an ACSI card (www.campingcard.com) or Camping Cheques (www.campingcheque.co.uk) to pay for our site fees - for a pitch for two people, car and caravan, awning, electricity and one dog. The ACSI sites cost 11, 13, or 15 euros, and Camping Cheques sites £13.95 - and some sites offer discounts of 7 nights for 6 or 14 nights for 11.
It's certainly worth having a look at the websites - there are quite a few sites in the area you're looking at. Several of them are larger sites, but from experience you may be only one of very few occupied pitches at that time of year. A couple of years ago we were on a site in the Ardeche which could accommodate 240 units, and only ten pitches were occupied. We had the pool to ourselves for most of our stay!
