Brittany or Holland: which should we choose?

Hi all

We are thinking of towing abroad for the first time next summer - mid to late August. We fancy Brittany (like the look of Domaine de la Ville Huchet) or the Netherlands. We are not sunworshippers but dry weather is always nice. We have 2 kids (8 and 5). Not that into on-site entertainment but enjoy swimming, playgrounds, scenery and historic places.

Where would you recommend?

Thanks

Luisa

Hi Luisa - We have never been to Holland but have visited Benodet in Brittany on a few occassions and have never been disappointed. We stayed at Camping Du Letty each times as the site is brilliant, clean and friendly. Short walk from site to Benodet along coastal path. Site it self is on the beach on the mouth of the River Letty. We sailed from Plymouth to Roscoff as we had never towed on the "wrong" side of the road before and it was only 100 miles from the harbour to the site.

I would like to suggest that you contact Select Sites at Abergavveny for their brochure on sites in Europe. They have a web page. Their service if you should wish to use them is first class - all we had to do was get the passports, Euros and the medical cards from the Post Office. Camping Du Letty also have a web page. If you are a member of the C&CC an article on Brittany and this site in particular is included in the magazine. It confirms our views of the site and the district.

For sightseeing visit Quimper and Concarneau - the cathedral in Quimper and the old walled town of Concarneau are well worth a visit.

Good luck with your holiday and I hope you will find the above information of use.

If you should use Camping Du Letty ask for a pitch next to the beach - we did and it was great to open the blinds in the morning and look out onto the beach.

I think it would have to be Brittany especially if you enjoy your food. I am sure there are many places of interest in the Netherlands however we did visit some years ago and all I can remember is rubbery cheese and clogs!

Hi Luisa

We went to Brittany for our first camping trip abroad in 1994. In those days 5 kids aged 6,8,10,12 and 14 and a frame tent. We went without booking a campsite but armed with Alan Rogers "France" guidebook. Almost by chance we discovered Du Letty in Benodet and returned there many time over the intervening years for EXCELLENT family holidays - our kids, "the baby" is now 19 and taller than me still reminisce about their happy times there. It sounds ideal for you as it has good family facilities but it is not into lots of onsite entertainment. It is a very safe site and our kids quickly made friends with the international clientele. We hardly saw them from breakfast to bedtime, apart from when they wanted lunch!! Have a look at my, and other reviews of this site on ukcampsite.co.uk website. The site is, also, featured in a full spread in this month's Camping and Caravanning Club mag if you are a member.

Since the kids have grown up we have visited Holland and stayed near Amsterdam and on the coast near to Rotterdam. Interesting but not a patch on Du Letty IMHO.

I'm not on commission from Du Letty by the way, unfortunately as I'm always singing its praises on this and other sites.

Family camping/caravanning holidays are WONDERFUL. Looking forward to having grandchildren to take with us.

Tim
