I've just ordered a new caravan, and am looking at security devices. I like the look of the Bulldog Max, mainly because it does not require the exact wheel alignment that the Alko Secure requires. I am concerned that it does not appear to be Sold Secure badged. Should I be concerned about this ? Any view would be appreciated.

I moaned to Alko about the millemeter perfect fit of the Alko secure. Makes life difficult on a double axle. Requires the Van to be Jacked up every time.

It seems that there may be legal implications of Bulldog supplying something that fits the Alko receptor without prior permission. I'm no Lawyer but I think I can see the issue (just) so maybe it's this type of legal stuff which stops Sold secure being able to endorse it.

Looks good to me though.

I've removed the Circlip from the back of the Alko locks which means I can choose whether to have the Alko Red Blob on the lock post.

The strong post and lock can be fitted which means the van cannot be towed away, although a wheel nut is nolonger covered, I have fitted locking wheel bolts anyway.

I painted the end of the Alko lock post Red so that there is still a visible deterant when used in this way.

I have one of the Bulldog Max wheel locks, and I must say that it is very easy to fit. You have quite a bit of leeway through the gaps in the wheel (I suppose this would depend on the wheels though). It appears to be a very effective piece of kit, but I dont know if there is any reason it hasn't got sold sold secure status.

Be aware that others on the forum have commented that the very latest vans have something blocking the reciever in the chasis that only the Alko kit can remove. I had no problems with my early 2007 van though, which just had a yellow dust cover in the reciever.

John,

I also use a Bulldog Max, it is a great piece of kit.

Does not interfere with the Motormover, and as others have said you do have a bit of leeway when aligning the wheel. I told my Insurers (NFU) about it and they were quite happy with it.

May also be worth considering that if you had the Alko lock and at some time in the future your particular design of wheel became obsolete (if say you damaged a wheel and had to replace it) the lock may also be of no use to you whereas the Bulldog one would.

Thanks for the comments/advice. I've tried emailing Bulldog about the lack of Sold Secure status, and they haven't bothered to reply. I think I'll take your advice and, after asking a few questions to my dealer about fitting with a motor mover, have a Bulldog Max ready for when my new caravan arrives.

Hi John, I posted this back in August

I E Mailed Bulldog this week to ask if there is a sold secure pending. The answer I got was at the least a fob off.

They said that "becauce the product was similar to another, sold secure would not list/test it"!!!

Hi Kevin, Thanks for your reply. Bulldog's story doesn't seem to hold water. There seems to be countless wheel clamps which are very similar, but are still Sold Secure tested. But, the Bulldog Max is significantly different from the Alko, in that it is not wheel specific, and does not require precise wheel alignment. I am going off the Bulldog, and moving towards the Alko Secure, despite the difficulty in fitting. Regards John

John ,I was going to buy the Bulldog before I got this Bull**** from them, Ill wait and see what happens for now. Ive got a wheel clamp but wanted to make use of the receiver on the wheel, which is now standard fit on alot of vans.
