We have just bought our Burstner C530TK 2005 and went away for the weekend. Once we hooked up the RCD kept tripping, we tried everything (even roped in a few other caravanners with no joy) we turned everything off, changed all the fuses, put the fuses in one by one.....nothing. Just can't figure it out. the person we bought it from naturally claims that they never had a problem. The manual shows a control panel for switching things on and off (water heater etc) no control panel to be found anywhere! We are first time caravaners with very little experience so im wondering if we were doing something wrong with setting up, any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

OK, start at the beginning. It trips when you hook up, so check the cable for damage. Check the plugs for loose wiring. If all that is OK, start at the caravan and make sure absolutley everything is turned off. Does it still trip. If yes, you have narrowed it down to the caravans electrical system. If no, then it must be something you have plugged in or switched on. Take it slowly and logically.

Look again at the caravan, if you have a number of RCDs, try to find which circuit is causing the trip. Turn them all off and hook up again. Turn each one off and on in turn.

If you get that far with no tripping, start the same process with your appliances.

You could also temporarily connect to another bollard if your cable can reach.

Hi there.
Prob of no help whatsoever but there must be a control panel somewhere.
Have you opened all cupboards, wardrobe, under each of the seats etc?

Have you tried an alternative mains hook up cable?

Hi Kev, thats the funny thing we have searched high and low, cupboards, under seats and there is no control panel. The lovely people next to us let us use their cable and we also used a different hook up point and still the same thing

There will surely be some sort of consumer unit. Try under the bed boxes. Have a look behind where your battery box is and follow the spaghetti.

When you say the rcd is tripping, are you referring to the one on the sites bollard?

If you dont have a manual with it which would show you where to look, you can download them from the Burstner website.

The Burstner is a German built van and as such does not have the kind of electrical setup that UK vans do.
If my memory recalls, the power comes into a dual purpose mains and 12v transformer in a unit usually in the wardrobe. (I have not worked on many Burstner vans as they are normally very good quality)

However, it is not something that anyone without extensive knowledge should try and do anything with as it not only has mains power to it but also does the 12v side of things.

The one thing I suggest is that the first thing you do is get the van serviced by a mobile engineer, he should be able to pinpoint where the problem is, and for your safety and that of your family.

The previous owner has obviously not told you the truth and that raises alarm bells as to what else is not working correctly.

What is certain, if the main power unit is faulty they are very expensive to replace.

Hi,
You don't say,but which RCD is tripping - is it the one in the van or is it the one on the EHU.It could be a faulty RCD, they do fail.
It must also be remembered the RCD will only trip if an earth downstream of the RCD s detected. It won't work if the fault is upstream (before) the RCD.
