Cadac BBQ

Just bought a Cadac BBQ and love it - apart from cleaning the fat from the fat-pan (it's bad enough cleaning the grill plate)! Has anyone any ideas or found anywhere which sells some sort of disposable 'fat-catcher' to put around the base. Tried putting some tin foil round, and apart from being fiddly to do, it wasn't all that effective either.

My Cadac has a pan like attachment, flat on one side and ribbed on the other. If you cook on it flat side up (and the ground is reasonably level, then the fat does not run off and you only have to clean that one surface.

saw advert for coconut based pads to soak up fat after cooking in CC magazine which arrived today.Am thinking of trying some as I hope that soaking the fat and a quick wash will sort it til we get home.

I have been thinking about getting one of these, are they worth the money and the effort of cleaning etc, or am I better off with a cheap bbq and the cooker in the van. Any advice would be appreciated.

Do you put water in the "moat"before starting to cook - works for us as you just pour out the water/fat mixture and give it all a quick wipe.

The newer Cadacs don't have the "moat" - something I miss because we used that occasionally to fry the potatoes when we have duck breast on the BBQ - lots of lovely fat! Also a lot easier to clean than the newer arrangement.

Hi Melanie

We love ours - we find it so much quicker and more versatile than an ordinary BBQ, although they are heavier to carry. I think they are worth the money, but shop around, there are bargains out there.

Our CC mag came yesterday too and saw the ad myself. They look ok - could this be the answer to my problem!!!!!

Also you can do a lot of other cooking outside for instance stirfry or curry, you wouldnt want to clean the inside of van after a stirfry. Also cook fryup for 5or 6 people outside so it has a lot of advantages as well as barbecuing.

The Cadac is far more than a BBQ (in fact it is not really a BBQ at all) it is really a multi function out door cooker. I love ours which I got for

Just about to order a Cadaq Carri Chef Deluxe 2009. Turns out I need other 'bits' too. Which regulator? Comes up with about 8 choices. All very confusing to a desk jockey like me. I need hose and gas too. Which gas would anybody recommend?

Many thanks

Ian

I would use which ever type of gas you use in the caravan, I use Propane. You can get a propane (or Butane) regulator that comes with hose and clips from Halfords for not very much (and I am sure any hardware type shop).

I use some kitchen tissue to wipe around before before it all gets too cold.

If I am using it daily I just pop some tissue in the moat after cooking and pull it out before lighting again - this soaks up 95% of the fat.

You can use tissue to soak up excess fat on the grill plate when cooking too.

I also use it to clean the grill and griddle after cooking.

Ummm - running out of uses for tissue now!

just got a cadac and do you just put the burner dish on the stem ? seems a bit dodgy to me if you do, instructions are not very clear and only explaine how to put the cooking surfaces on the fat pan not the blue dish on the legs !

Just slots on and is perfectly safe. We love ours and use it for many things! Never had a problem with it so far.

I have just returned from a 3 week break in the South of France and cannot understand why so many people are hooked onto using a Cadac. After every evening meal I watched as the many Cadac users trooped over to the washing area along with their bottles of washing-ip liquid to clean their barbecue/griddle plates. What a chore that must be especially when you have to do it every night (and after a few glasses of the red stuff)

Is it the name which has just become a "must have" for we caravanners ? Yes they may be good as a multi function outdoor cooker but I cannot see that they are actually barbecues anyway, just a glorified hotplate. You might as well just use a large frying pan on an external gas burner.

For many years, I have always used a lightweight, folding, portable gas barbecue which uses lava rock to generate a perfectly genuine BBQ flavour. It stands on a suitable small table to provide a suitable working height. I always purchase(

We have some Cadac cleaner which brings the fat catcher / moat up nice and clean and we to add to the flavour (not for lazyness of course!!!) clean the BBQ on our last morning on site, rather than every night.

The Cadac live up to this abuse and still looks good.

Just got back from scotland where I used the Cadaq for the first time. In fact, it was the first time I've ever had a barbie. Just never got round to it.

I was up there with 3 of my brothers to watch The Open. Great time. The evenings were sunny and warm and we sat out with the Cadaq going. Bacon chops, steak, prawn kebabs. All cooked to a tee. Really impressed with it. Problem though is the cleaning. I used the ridged grill and its almost ruined. I just can't get some of the black stuff off. I will buy a BBQ cleaner and hopefully that will help.

Jnet, When cleaning the moat and 'pouring away' the water/fat mixture where do you pour it? We can't go pouring that lot down drains surely?

I used copious amounts of kitchen roll to get almost all of the fat out then washed the moat. Simple enough.

Also, now I can't work out how to get all the bits back in the bag in the same way it arrived. Can anybody help with this?

Thanks

Ian

We've got a 3 year old Carri Chef Deluxe and get all except the legs, skottle and lid in the bag. I always remove the hose first and store that with its regulator in the front of the bag, inside goes the (in order) complete base, fat collector, stainless pot stand, stainless grill, deflector (in its bag), grill plate (in its bag), plastic tray (from between legs). This all fits in snugly.

I don't clean mine at the end of a meal, I simply heat it for a couple of mins prior to next use to soften everything up then wipe off with the heavy blue tissue you get on massive rolls (usually seen at car boot sales for about

I'm an avid CADAC user and pretty much use just the flat or ribbed plate for all our food.

However, for cleaning I use "Fairy Power Spray" it comes in a green spray bottle and makes life SO easy.

just wait 'til the plate cools down, spray over with FPS and leave for 20 mins; it's then just a matter of wiping it off, brilliant.

just give it a try.

Pete..

PS I use a large TrugTub (those big rubbery buckets you get from garden centres for a fiver) to rinse off in 'cos the sinks site areusually too small to accomodate the Cadac plates.
