Cadac Carri Chef delux

A couple of years ago I graduated from a Safari Chef to a Carri Chef. I had some early problems with blow back causing the control knob assembly to catch fire. Replacement parts were sent out by Cadac, under warranty, and everything worked fine. Now 18 months later the barbecue is exhibiting similar problems. It appears to lose pressure and the flame at the burner goes yellow and feeds back to catch light to the control assembly. Needless to say I am afraid to leave the barbecue unattended as the only solution is to Dowse the 'fire' with water and then relight!!!

I have checked connection gas bottle supply levels and replaced the supply tube and everything is secure/ working, add is the caravan oven etc.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems? I should welcome feedback.

It sounds to me like a joint has come loose somewhere along the gas pipe: If it were me, I would have a look and see if I could see any screw joints and fiddle them with my fingers to see if anything felt loose.
Which parts were replaced by Cadac in the original repair? I'd start my investigation with the joints to those parts, but check every connection along the way as well. Even if you find and remedy one loose connection, keep looking in case ther's another one.

Thanks for your comments Glozza. I have checked all joints/connections and everything is secure. Blowing down the has pipe indicates that the on/Off switch is also working. Although there is no apparent wind here at present the only conclusion I can draw is that I am trying to run the barbecue at too low setting that causes it to 'blow back' and burn at the nozzle instead of the burner! Worrying if this is the case though and potentially points to a design issue!!

It might be totally wrong but my bro in law had much the same problem and he also got the parts replaced under warranty, however if you read the instructions that come with the cadac it states somewhere that the hose from gas connection should be no more than a certain length, I forget what that is but if you still have the instructions have a look, now I get the impression you are running yours from an external gas socket on your caravan, I think this is the case because you mention the van oven working ok, in my experience it's often the case that people will use too long a hose so as to get the cadac far enough away from the caravan so there's no fire hazard, I am guessing you've used it perfectly ok with this hose previously but just because it may have worked previously if it's longer than specified that is likely to be a contributory factor I would think, I my assumptions are incorrect then I apologise unreservedly.

Sir Sticky

I have the same Cadac.
The reference to to the gas supply flexible pipe is merely being compliant with current regulations. A decent dealer is NOT allowed to sell a pipe over a certain length.

Whilst on the Cadac does anyone know how I can replace the spark ignition system. It stopped working a while back and whilst I haven't tried that hard I cannot source the new spark bits.
These are fitted on the non gas side so Prof John wont smack my wrists :p

I was going to ask if you're using it on a caravan gas outlet, but I've been beaten to it! If this is the case it might be worth borrowing another barbie and trying that on this gas point to see what happens - or using your barbie on someone else's gas point, or connecting the barbecue straight to a bottle (through a regulator, of course!!!). It might help isolate which bit of the system the fault is in.

Alternatively if you are currently connected to the bottle - you say you replaced the hose, did that include the regulator? There were a number of stories a while back about regulators blocking, that might be causing your low pressure problem (if that is what's causing it).

Please let us know when you finally solve it, my curiosity is up now!

Thanks for your comments. I have been using it connected to the caravan output socket on a 5m pipe. However, I also have shorter 2m, regulater connected pipe and second gas cylinder with me, so will try this combination later and see if it exhibits similar faults!

I have tested a short (2m) lead on a separate gas cylinder tonight and all worked properly....no blowback. A bit early yet to draw any conclusions but i,all try a few more days with this set-up before introducing the next variable ( which will be short gas pipe / caravan socket).

One thing to look at is the internal diameter of the flexible gas hose? The standard they say is 8mm at 1mt for appliances but you can get smaller and larger, you may have the smaller?
