Cadac paint coming off.....

We've just purchased a Cadac Eazi Chef deluxe for our big holiday next week. Thought we would try it out at home so we look like we know what we're doing on site, lol!

We've used it twice with the BBQ grill, it's the new style one, not like a traditional BBQ grill. I have put the deflector on underneath and both times I have had flames licking up through the grill and scorching the meat. Is this normal? I was cooking standard BBQ stuff - kebabs, sausages and burgers.

Also when my hubby went to clean it yesterday the paint seems to be peeling off the tray, deflector and BBQ grill. Is this normal too?

Just want to know whether we should be taking it back or not before we go away.

Thanks for any help!

Hi Louise

We used our Cadac 3 times recently. Last year I burnt everything , because I cooked too long and had the temperature on the highest setting. This time we cooked with medium heat, lid on and hey presto excellent finish.

As for the deflector never had flames shooting out as you described, but you can see them.

My only critcism is that cleaning after use is a Bl**dy hard task!

We use propane direct from the caravan's BBQ gas point. Where do you source your gas? If you are using a stand alone gas regulator maybe the regulator is faulty allowing too much gas pressure through??

Cheers

Louise,

I don't think u use the deflector when you cook on the grill plate, only when you cook on the open chrome mesh.

My Cadac must be 4/5 years old and I also notice enamel flaking off the underside. Dont seem to have any important effect and is not visible except when packing up.

I have had some flaming moments in my time (cheap beefburgers) but recently I have only cooked with the regulator on the lowest position and avoid the above.

My Cadac is about the same vintage as Paul's - perhaps a tad younger. But the changes introduced since have been minor technical improvements only such as a hook for the lid so you don't have to upturn it or hold whilst attending to the meal - the basic principles haven't changed. I'm pretty sure you DO use the deflector with the double sided grill tray. I always do anyway and get good results, seldom using the wire grill.

I think it's a great tool and have never had shooting flames or whatever. Best results are obtained on lower gas settings with the lid on. And full English on a bright morning all sizzling together, eggs 'n all, well!!.............

Unless I've had something really messy cooking I tend to just wipe it down when cool with kitchen roll rather than soap and water. Stops stuff sticking next time although the purists will probably say I'm a culinary health hazard.

Cadac Queries - CarriChef

I've just been in touch with Cadac Bristol, they told me to:

1. Not use the deflector plate when using the griddle pan

2. Put the skottel pan directly onto the blue base when using that

3. Only use the deflector plate when bbqing

4. Fill the fat pan moat with water to make it easier to clean, avoid burn ups, add moisture to cooking

Hope this helps folks

The advice Lyn got from Cadac is exactly the opposite from what they told me!

I was told that although, technically, you should not need to use the deflector with the griddle pan, in practice the company has had reports from customers who use the pan without the deflector experiencing flaking of the non stick surface after a period of time.

I was told that to be on the safe side to use the deflector unless the flame was at a very low setting.

So Louise, pick which answer you prefer!

We took the Cadac back and they swapped it for a new one so I don't have flaky paint anymore. The only funny thing was we originally had a 2009 model with the funny BBQ grill and we now have a 2008 which has a traditional style BBQ grill.

I think I prefer this one and I think I will use the deflector with everything as I can't see it will do any harm.

Hubby also informed me that he opened the regulator on the gas bottle to maximum so will probably not do that any more!

When did cooking become so complicated, lol?

I don't have the hook on mine unfortunately Dave, sorry if I've misled you.

I've seen one or two recently that did on site. They appeared to be identical to my old Weber charcoal job which you could still see in many garden centres, Homebase or whatever. Just a bit of bent metal near but curved thro' 180 degrees away from the lid's the interior edge that hooks on the side to stop you having to put it on the deck and also gives two hands to work with - or one and a beer :)

Absolutely sure you could make one if you'er even modestly handy.

ps How does the exchange email thing work? It would have been v helpful to be able to send sketches/pictures on another thread I've been arguing. If you are reading this Mod can you do as Dave asks anyway.

Louise, and others re my earlier post....

Was out at weekend 4 days using my Cadac each am & pm.

In view of the ealier posts I used the deflector 100% this time.

What I found was that the cooking process was about twice as long and I had to have the regulator set about half way as oposed to lowest setting.

When I turned the heat down for the breakfast eggs the whole thing was far too hot for the more delicate cooking process. Also longer time cooking and (a lot) more gas used.

Consequently I will NOT use the deflector again with the grill/plate as Cadac advised and in 4+ seasons I do not see any deterioration of these surfaces yet.
