Hi,

Can anyone advise on a good site around the Caen area? I hope to retrace my american grandfathers steps during the war. So if anyone can also advise about good museums etc I would be much obliged.

We stayed at Chateau de Martragny in 2004, it's a Castels site, good sized pitches, 6 miles from Bayeux and right in the heart of D-day country, there are museums everywhere, we started at Arromanches where the Mulberry harbour is and followed the signposts for " Objectiv un Port ". The country roads take you to various points of interest such as the huge gun battery at Longues sur mer, the American war cemetery at Colville, La Pointe du Hoc, there are so many sights to see. Also in Caen there is the Memorial a fantastic museum that is a must to visit, well signposted too. Hope that helps a little.

There's a very good Camping Municipal at Arromanches, only a few minutes walk from the beach and museums. We stayed there last June. You can drive to all the places of interest like the American Cemetery, Bayeux, the beaches, Pointe du Hoc etc in a short time.

I can also vouch for Chateau de Martragny. I have stayed there many times over the last few years and with the exception of the restaurant which was poor would happily recommend it. it also takes Camping Cheques in low season.

Hi to all that have replied, many many thanks.

I will try the castels site, it sounds good. I did stop on a castels site at Quimper a few years ago and that was superb.

many thanks once again.
