We are off to Spain in May and we intend to break the journey both ways in a tent so any advise about sites on this route and the recommended route would be brilliant. I have read the previous thread about plenty of sites at Millau (is there one you can recommend). At the moment I am nervously excited about the trip!!

Since you are talking about Millau, you intend going down the A71/A75. When we do this route we stop at the village of Aguessac where there's a municipal situated on the banks of the Tarn and is only about 5 miles from Millau. But it might be better if you tell us at what time you're leaving and from where. Presumably you won't be towing?

Sorry! I see now you're leaving from Calais. My favourite route to northern Spain is via Boulogne, Abbeville, Rouen, Chartres, Orleans, Vierzon then either the A71/A75 or the N20. Both are good routes with free sections on both. You mention stopping at Millau, which is nearly 600 miles from Calais - probably more than can be done comfortably in a day - hence my previous question, what time do you leave?

Huge apologies to John Douglas - We are leaving Bristol 4pm on 14th May we hope to get the 8.20pm chunnel and aim to drive just south of Paris before stopping at services for a few hours sleep. We will then push on from their at about 7am and drive until around 3pm. If we don't manage to be in Millau for the journey down we will try again on the way back when we are stay in St Omar for a couple of days before returning to get the dog sorted out. We are going to south eastern Spain (Murcia) not to the north. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for coming back to me.

Jane,

We are just back from ten days - in an apartment - near Murcia and are contemplating taking the 'van next year. Do you have any info. on sites in that area?

You could consider taking the French Motorrail service all the way to Perpignan. Expensive yes, but saves a lot of time and stress.

Personally, if I was considering the trip I would just book a cheap travel hotel for the night. Save the hassle and have a good shower. By the time you add the site fees the difference is not so great.
