Hi Davie

Went there last summer for a week. Wife and I were not over impressed but our children (10 and 5) enjoyed it. I guess it depends on what you want from a site, my wife and I prefer CC sites and Callows is definitely commercial. When we were there it was quite 'lively' lots of teenagers and associated noise during the day and early evening although in fairness there is a noise curfew (cant remember whether it was 10 or 11) in place at fear of eviction and certainly at the allotted hour it was as though someone had flicked a switch-total silence. As you know there is a pool, pub (with 'pub singer' to entertain you!), caf

Hi Davie, sorry to say this, but i have to agree with Martyn, we also prefer cc sites, we visited Callow top 2 years ago (just for a look) but turned around and came away, too many children, pitches too close together etc etc.

Sorry to put a dampner on it, but it deffinately wasn't for us!

Regards, Andrew.

Hi Davie

We stayed there just over a year ago for a week in October. Sorry but I have to say it's the worst campsite I've ever been on. We were on hardstanding and there was only enough room for a caravan and awning or caravan and car so we couldn't put the awning up. There was potholes everywhere. Individual unisex showers 20p which wern't very warm both in terms of water and the cubicle. We pitched opposite the park (daughter aged 12 at the time), unruly kids on the park till midnight, never saw any camp site staff asking them to leave the park/make less noise. Kids running around the campsite at all hours, no sign of parents or staff.

There is a very steep but short drive upto the campsite with trees next to the road, in October the road was wet with wet leaves covering the road. Lots of units towed by cars were skidding and couldn't get up the road. There were 4x4 drivers who kindly assisted. I was ok towing up the hill as it hadn't rained at the time but skidded on the way out with the caravan on the back.

I wouldn't recommend the site.

Check out this website do a search on 'Callow Top' and read the reviews:

must agree with most of the comments, weve been here too. we had a pitch allocated and were unable to erect our awning also.pitches were very small, and unfortunately the site was full and other pitches which were vacant at that time we arrived were also far to small, luckily we did not have the kids or it would have been a nightmare.the site itself was ok,have been on worse.

I have visited this site many times in the past when it was a large site split into seperate fields almost entirely used by rallies, however in recent times it has moved more and more over to statics ( an offshoot to seasonal pitches perhaps)I called in a few months ago to have a look and decided that it was now crossed off my list of sites to visit. The approach as others have said is very steep and narrow with an interesting blind bend under the old railway bridge,I do know off people who have 'cooked ' their clutch on the hill.Having said all that if you want a site that is handy for Ashborne and the Tissington trail then maybe it might suit.

Hi Davie,

went there a few years ago, its got lots of things to do but they do pack you very very close together and they have very strict rules(no visitors etc)the pool was great but crowded and it was impossible to get a meal in the onsite pub as it was full.my little lad enjoyed it but i felt like i was back at school with all the rules.another point worth mentioning is that the road from ashbourne to the site is very steep only just made it withh my sierra pulling the van.
