Just come back from a day at the caravan show and was impressed to see that Calor Gas are producing a lighter 6kg cylinder known as Calor Lite. The new cylinder will be released in March 2008 eventually replacing the old syle cylinder completely.

According to the blurb, the new cylinder will be 49.7% lighter than a traditional 6kg cylinder. All cylinders will come with a Gas Trac guage fitted telling you how much gas is left.

I asked a girl on the Calor stand how much the cylinders would be but there are no details of prices yet. I was told that they will be initially released through caravan dealers and that there will be no trouble in swapping your existing cylinder.

You can find more details at www.calorlite.co.uk

I reckon it will be cheaper and more widely available than BP gas. On the plus side, the connection is the same as the present Calor cylinder so no need to buy any additional fittings.

Don't get too excited guys - it's just a light-weight (better grade) steel bottle.

So I can't see how it could be lighter than the BP (Ragasco in Norway make them) Gas Light bottles, and the Gas-Trac gauge isn't as convenient (or as useful) as being able to see the gas level, but a big thumbs up to Calor for using a better grade steel and reducing the weight.

And whilst the BP stle clip-on head is convenient, it's not anything like as gas-tight as the Calor bull-nose screw connector.

People complain that the refill costs for bottled gas are so high, with barely a difference between the various sizes.

OK that's an oversimplification, but why doesn't a 13 kg bottle cost twice as much to exchange as a 6 kg bottle.

Answering my own question, that because the gas content makes up only a small part of the refill costs - the majority is down to transportation (lorries moving metal bottles around), bottle refurbishment, and profits.

And here's the rub - why should we now pay more for a lighter bottle that costs less to transport? The LPG re-sellers should be charging a lower price to refill the lighter bottles.

When I spoke with a woman on the Calor stand at the "show" she told me that the cost of the new lightweight ones is expected to be "a few pence more" (her words) which I really do believe will be translated by retailers into "a few pounds more".

I hope I am wrong ....... lets wait and see.

Hi Denise,

Interesting to hear about Waudby's. Looks like they're going to be one of the first to trial the new cylinder ahead of the March release date.

Did the cylinders that you saw have the coloured design on a band around the outside?

Hi Martin

Can't remember if they had a band around or not, but I am definately going to get either the BP Gas light or the Calor hopefully for next years caravaning, it will make a difference with the weight factor. It would be excellent if they will exchange the old cylinders so that you don't have to buy new ones. I will try again early next year and see what the difference is with the cost of the Calor and the BP cylinders.

Hi Mikey,

According to the Calor rep interviewed on the programme, we will be able to exhange our current cyclinders for the new one free of charge. The Lite cylinders have the same connection as the present ones.
