Camping near the Canal du Midi

My husband, daughter and I are planning to visit the Canal du Midi at the end of July (she's a teacher, so we have no choice!)and realise that we will need to book a pitch instead of our usual more casual approach in June. Daughter and I are planning to do some walking along the canal and himself will do all the domestic stuff and generally laze in the sun. We will start at the Toulouse end and think we may get as far as Castelnaudary. We'd like to find a nice site to use as a base somewhere between the two. Does anyone have any ideas? As it will be high summer, it'll be pretty hot, so we will need plenty of shade. A pool would be nice. Daughter is allergic to the chemicals in pools, so river or lake swimming would be a bonus.

All suggestions appreciated!

Jo

Thanks Val. I hoped you might have an answer. You certainly seem to have covered all four corners of France in your time. I checked out the 2 sites. One of them doesn't seem to work, but the other is good. There do seem to be a very limited number of sites in the area I am looking in, but I think I have found one which might do. No pool, but on a lake, so the daughter should be happy. Husband has just mentioned mosquitoes - they haven't been a problem when we've been in our more usual June. Plenty of Jungle Formula then!

Thanks again.

Thanks Evans of Sprot - perhaps we'll see you on a site somewhere next year - and I promise we'll help out with any 'walking required' duties!

I can still lug an aquaroll with the best of them!

We haven't really done the North West - only one site on the Normandy/Brittany borders, quite a few years ago. There are other areas, too, that we've hardly covered - perhaps because we had bad weather on our first visit and just never went back (like the Alps or the Vosges areas).

We've been camping and caravanning now for 29 years (which is a scary thought) and for about the last 12 years have had two holidays each year and occasionally a shorter visit too - so it does get you about a bit. We try to 'do' one new site each trip, if only for one night. This year we 'did' two, one for two nights. Some of these have become favourites over the years - some we've not been back to!

We've driven through the area you're visiting, but not actually stayed there though we have stayed north of Carcassone in the Black Mountains. It does seem that some apparently scenic areas of France seem to suffer from almost a complete lack of campsites, where in others there's a new site around every corner!

I used to be bitten by mossies - but not any longer. Think its the male menopause!

Even so in the past I was not really bothered by them in France!
