Can a low battery blow the charger?

Hi.
My caravan battery wasn't charging, so I took the charger to my local caravan service place to have it tested, it was dead.
I didn't buy a new one from him because it was £60 more expensive than eBay! That didn't go down too well with him--- but what was said is another story.
He did , however, say that a battery that had gone below 12v charge ( even though it was now fully charged again in my workshop) could make the new charger blow as well.
I'm not totally convinced this is true as he was also showing me some super duper new batteries that he sells, again way more expensive than my local tyre and battery place.
But, I don't want to take a chance on blowing my new charger in case he was right?
Any thoughts anyone?
Cheers.
Steve.

Sounds like a lot of rubbish.
Was he trying to sell you a lithium , battery.
