Last week we put the caravan to bed for the winter as we probably wont be taking it away again until February half term. Work, family and dark days are the reason for no more caravan outings for the next few months. This site keeps me going and I love to share all your caravan stories and queries. Does anyone use this site to feed their love of what caravanning brings?

we only bought our caravan in August, and had put it to bed for the winter a couple of weeks ago, but we're already missing going away.

Consequently the van will be woken up again very shortly. I am changing the gas from butane to propane today, and we're going to Cawood Park near York at the beginning of December

Hi bev,

last year we finished at the end of the summer season. All the time through the winter we were always talking of what we are going to do this year. We tried a few days away this year just out of the season. It was a bit wet with the storms coming through. We did buy a 700 watt oil filled radiator and left it on all the time. Nice and cosy it was when you get in after a day out. Mornings are even better. Leaving the top vent open there was no condensation and agin nice and warm.

So really, going outside is the same as being at home. You just put extra cloths on. We are hopeing to get a few days away at the end of November before the caravan is put to bed.

You are right though about the forums. They do help getting through the time the caravan is away. There are plenty of tips and places recomended for you to think about.

No I am afraid I am in the 'put it to bed' fraternity. What ever you do, a trip will cost money, and we need to use the cash for the maximum benefit.

Bluntly to go away in winter to sit in it using lots of gas and watching tv, to my mind, why bother? If I wish to take country walks I can easily do that and return home when it get dark at 3 pm, and then enjoy the space of home. Similarly, I can take the bus (free) to town any day or night and enjoy all it has to offer.

Caravanning to me embodies, sun, sea, lots of sun tan lotion, BBQ's with cold beers and seeing and meeting new places and people.

Hi all,

we are usually the put to bed sort of caravanners, we put ours away after halloween weekend as a rule, but this year we have one winter trip planned to the Lincoln Christmas market. We have booked a site about 10 miles away from Lincoln, so we can spend the day at the market, and then go 'home' to our lovely cosy van, without the usual 50 mile drive home we normally have when visiting Lincoln. If we like caravanning in the cold, we may do it again after Christmas, we'll see what happens.

Cheers Roy

Afternoon,

I also put our van to bed during the winter more so have 2 young kids as well, not much fun if it is cold and wet outside for them, they get a bit irritated and also the dog can get unsettled as well.

I totally agree with Scotch Lad on the BBQ's, beer side and going to new places. Out van will be woken in March for its worthy and lengthy spruce up for its first outing, but it will get looked over each month til then. It is a good place to hide the xmas pressies from the kids!!!!

Cheers

Rob.

However, to argue against my own Post, there is one type of winter caravanning we are looking at, and that is heading for Spain or wherever for the winter sun. This is being discussed elsewhere on the Forum so I won't go into too much detail, but again I indiactes that I am definitely not a COLD weather camper. Sorry, but the knees hurt too much.

We extended our usual 'season' this year and we came home today from a trip to Somerset where we visited Bridgewater Carnival last Friday, Burnham on Sea fireworks display on Sunday and their Carnival last night. We stayed on a full facility site with hard standings and 'proper' roads so the recent bad weather didn't affect us but sadly the caravan will now go into storage until next February. For us the dark cold nights are best spent at home where we will plan our itinerary for next year and save some money towards the longer trips.

As for the website, we spent part of our time in Somerset with six good friends who we have met through caravan forums so we had a kind of 'mini meet' although we were on different caravan sites. We like to read about the experiences and tips from fellow caravanners and I spend more time on the computer during the colder months.

I notice that next years Practical Caravan magazine readers rally in the UK is being held at Stowford Farm Meadows in May, we enjoyed the last one held there and are planning to go to the next one so maybe we'll have chance to say hi and put faces to names if anybody else is going.
