Car Insurance-Dog Owners Beware!

I have just insured my car again and on listening to the list of conditions read out by the person on the phone I got a shock. Apparently by leaving a car window down a little to provide fresh air if I leave my dogs in the car I am COMPLETELY INVALIDATING MY INSURANCE. I had no idea that this was the case and have been doing this for years. I explained that the doors and boot would still be alarmed, but it made no difference - window open = no insurance. I have checked with a couple of other insurance companies and they have the same policy. We are off in our van next week with the dogs, so if they can't go somewhere then neither do we because I would never leave them in a car without fresh air.

HI Eileen.

Your quite right there. If you are seen to compromise the integraty of security of the vehicle in any way, then the insurance company won't pay up.

One of the more common ones is that a lot of people add sat nav to their car and don't realise that they are only insured for

Intersting. I have a lockable gate in the boot of my Range Rover, which means that I can leave the upper tailgate open, but the car is still secure. I'd never thought of telling my insurers.

I wouldn't bother mate, they will just insist you lock the vehicle with the factory fitted locks.

So fido can fry, but the burgler must have a fair game to play getting in!!

Don't let the dog bite him, you could get done for that.

Lovely lawful Britain.

If you regularly transport dogs then there are secure devises that allow the window to be "open" but fixed.

If you join a "club" then that club will often have negotiated a specific insurance policy that covers you.

Similarly - if you go to a true independent broker (as opposed to a tied agent or "Multie Tied Agent" - who only can offer a limited range from a panel of providers) they will be able to research the whole market on your behalf.

Finaly - Steve - believe me - I am NO fan of Loss Adjusters - biggest corporate rip off I know of in my line of work!

They insure your car etc having quoted on the value you state then offer you peanuts when it is written off! Diabolical!

Try to go for an agreed value policy if at all possible.

However, the bit about the burgler suing the burgled if the poor little darling hurts himself falling thro the window is nothing to do with the Insurance Companies - You can blame the numpty politicians for that bit of madness.

They drafted the laws that make it possible for a Burgler to have more rights whilst on your property than you do.

The insurance companies just have to charge us all more to cover the payouts when the toe-rag makes a claim against you.

What a world.
