Hi, I’m new to caravanning so it’s the first time towing one. I understand from my insurance company I’m only insured as third party when towing. Is this standard or can I find an insurance to cover as fully comp?
Hi, thank you for replying. I have insurance for the caravan but I was led to believe the fully comp car insurance becomes 3rd party when towing. Is this normal?Post #8 of the link below explains. If you wish to cover the caravan against damage when towing or elsewhere you need insurance for the caravan. So your insurer is correct in that when towing your van is covered for third party, but the car retains its comprehensive cover if that what you have.
Time to get through French ports
Hi ,We have not used been on a ferry to France since before Brexit, I'm presuming the days of being waved off the boat and out of the port in a matter of minutes have gone! how long should we expect it to take these days, we will be traveling to St-Malo later in the year on what I'd imagine...forums.practicalcaravan.com
As in my above post I said the caravan is third party risks when being towed but the car retains fully comprehensive if that’s it’s normal insurance cover. You seem to have asked the same question again. I’ve never had my car insurance reduced to third party when towing. I suggest you seek clarity from your car insurers or change insurer.Hi, thank you for replying. Thank you, I will do that.As in my above post I said the caravan is third party risks when being towed but the car retains fully comprehensive if that’s it’s normal insurance cover. Thanks, could you please update us on the outcome. And apologies but welcome to the Forum. Hope you have many happy days with the caravan.Thank you, I will do that.
I agree that there seems to be a misunderstanding and it may be illegal for any insurer to have that sort of Unfair clause. However if the car is not rated for towing or the caravan weighs more than the car can legally tow, then maybe a different outcome?Whatever is being towed has no influence on the cover being orovided by the car insurers.
My suspicion is that whoever you spoke to didn't understand the question, either that or doesn't understand the cover.
I would advise you to write (or email) your cars insurer and ask the specific question. "When towing a caravan will I still have comprehensive cover ON MY CAR"
I have never heard of an insurer reducing cover when towing.
That’s a good result, pity it took so many attempts. I sincerely hope you never have to make a claim through them 😂Finally! I have an answer from my insurer after asking the same question 11 times so it wasn’t clear. i now have confirmed that my fully comp when towing - yes!!
