Gill, I live on the Island, and use the ferries a lot.

As for your areial, it is NOT necessary to remove it, or the spike on the top.

They have plenty of clearance, dont worry about it.

gill, there was a previous posting about this some time ago ( why is the search facilty on the forum so un user friendly?).

As Damian says there is no problem and this was confirmed by all those who responded.

Pesonally I went from Lymington to Yarmouth on Wight Link on the Friday evening of the Spring Bank Holiday. I had the van on tow and three bikes on the roof of a Honda CRV which were higher than the van. There were 3 ferries on the trip at any one time and it appeared to me that the loaders were very experienced and would select a ferry to be loaded with all high vehicles and then not lower the suspended car deck. If there were only a few high vehicles they went on first or last and were outside of the limit of the car deck.

The only problem we've ever had with Cross Channel ferries, was when we took the SeaCat from Dover to Calais, and the guy loading the vehicles saw my aerial on my Volvo Car was still up.

Grabbing it with both hands, he tried to force it down, and absolutely wrecked it as it was a power aerial.

They refused to accept liability, despite admitting it, and said that I should have powered it down before going on board!!
