2005 Bessacarr Cameo 495SL

I thought I would advise all who have the above make of caravan of our most recent event. Our van is having it's annual service and the dealer just advised me that they found a cracked brake drum on the van. This may be a one off however it is certainly worth taking note of.

Although the crack was obviously a material defect, overheating of the brake drums due to consistent downhill overrun braking can promote such a failure. A sure sign that the brakes have been running hot for longer periods is if the brake linings appear glazed.

It must be stressed the Alko supplied axle with the faulty drum attached happened to be on your Bessacarr, being built by the Swift group it could have been on any one of there model 'names'... or indeed have been delivered to another caravan/trailer manufacturer using the Alko chassis.

Overall then and given the total numbers supplied by Alko, this occurrence is very rare indeed.

However these things do happen and well worth mentioning so people are aware and don't ignore possible warning signs regardless of make of van.

Brake glazing can also be caused by very light braking, apparent with badly adjusted brakes.
