Well done Read caravans for taking an interest in reading through the comments on these pages. It shows that you are interested in what we the customers think of some of the vans and the service we recieve. At least armed with this information you can sort out any problems before they arise.

Keep up the good work

I still think you are being a bit unfair Scott. Dealers are businesses the same as any other. I suspect many people have similar complaints regarding cars, washing machines or anything else for that matter. They all have overheads and a lot of red tape that eats money. Just look along the average high street at the empty shops and that gives an idea of how bad things are for many businesses. I make no comment regarding the original one you contacted but even you stated that they were not enthusiastic about coming out, and that you had to 'push them'. Possibly that lack of enthusiasm should have given warning signs and it would have been an option to make other arrangements as back up.

The dealer in Dundee is relatively small, but even some of the largest dealers in the UK do have problems as seen by a change in ownership either as a take over, or to avoid receivership.

It is encouraging that certain dealers/manufacturers feel that watching this Forum has advantages, but I also feel that many of the comments posted here, are concerned as much with perception rather than facts and need to be viewed in that framework.

scotch lad i dont want to fall out with you but you have backed this dealer in Dundee since I started this thread and had a dig at me...I know what buisness costs are I work in a small company (5 of us) we sell shop equipment, we are based in Glasgow but go to the borders and even up to Inverness ,its called looking aftre you customers or looking for buisness, if you spend over

I have changed my van several times now all from the same dealer and each time I have been offered a good deal hence staying with the same dealer. Each time I have changed the van the final deal has always been done on what it is going to cost me to change. I have always bought from new so I know the selling price and hence you can work out what the part exchange value of the old van is. Sometimes the dealer is able to juggle with the margin on the new van and sometimes he may pay over book price for my old van but to me its always the difference that matters. Most dealers are fairly limited on what they can cut into margins etc. but most are prepared to offer extras such as awnings at very good rates or other accessories which can be thrown in to seal the deal.I have also been honest with my dealer if I've been offered a better price elsewhere, I tell him and in every case he has matched it or bettered it.

The other major item when buying a van is the after sales service you can expect.

Don't worry, falling out is not on the agenda, merely friendly discussion.

My 'bone of contention' if that is the correct phrase, is that you made what I felt were generalised and sweeping statements based on one relatively minor incident. Even the title of your post 'caravan dealers' implied a plural, but that was incorrect as you subsequently stated other dealers were more helpful to you. I also felt that even in your OP you stated that 'I had to talk her into going to see my van' which implied that the girl in question was not comfortable with agreeing with you and was possibly overuled later., The discourtesy was in them not contacting you to cancel. As for their claim to be the largest in Scotland, I cannot confirm or deny that. However, looking at the size of a number of dealerships both in that area, and in the Central Belt I do feel they are being a bit optimistic. I am also not aware of them winning any 'Dealer of the Year' awards as others have done.

We have all been in business so are all aware of what issues are at stake. My last operational area that I controlled included Serbia, Croatia and Hungary and getting shipments from the UK and US was always fraught, and although my customers demanded. and received 24 hour instant service, possibly as a result of that pressure, I am more tolerant towards others. My 'worst nightmare' was shipping 100 cubic meters of Cesium brine from Aberdeen to the Rpomano/Hungarian border, delivery within 7 days. This stuff weighs 2.3 SG and will crystalise under 30 degrees C, so I had to arrange 7 refrigerated trucks, reverse the fridge units to heat the trucks and carry the brine in ISO containers. I could also point out that cesium brine costs _2300 per litre so the thought of a breakdown or leak was always there. However, all went well.

Finally, I am pleased you have resolved your problem and hope you enjoy your next van.
