I was on the motorway today, coming north from the midlands and just south of manchester on the south bound carrageway there was a caravan lying on it's side with the a 4x4 something like a frontera also on it's side, all the emergency services were arriving, but there were alot of rubberneckers too the northbound carriageway was also nearly at a standstill, hope they are all ok, but the weather was good and there was no wind.

With respect, but what is this post trying to tell us? Considering the total number of accidents on our roads, it really isn't surprising that the odd caravan is involved, as well.

The message is - no matter how good the road and weather conditions are - don't skimp on your safety checks; make sure tyres are ok, load caravan correctly etc., and drive sensibly. Should be basic common sense for a caravanner.

I read Andrew's point differently.

Accidents with all sorts of vehicles are common place unfortunately, but it is the Rubberneckers who add to the missery and delay????

Cheers

Alan

Cathryn, He is looking for a fight ignore him. J.Lo
I'm not looking for a fight at all. I just wanted to point out that one shouldn't single out caravanners for special treatment. Other road users have to exercise just as much due care and attention.

I took the original posting to be more one of concern for a fellow caravanner in trouble

No names were posted so nobody has had their personal dilemma revealed

I would have liked to know that the people were OK if I had witnessed such an event

As in the original posting I too hope that they are all OK

Like others I hope that no one was injured as a result of this or indeed any other incident.

Statistics are not easy to come by, but I note that on one day over the holiday, the BBC Radio 2 traffic report contained references to hold ups on 12 different roads. The reporter only mentioned the vehicle involved in only one of the incidents, and yes it was a caravan.

Why single out caravans when incidents occur?

Perhaps we should lobby the BBC to report the type of vehicle in every incident they report.

Because everyone loves to hate caravanners - my favourite is when you get the angry idiot overtaking you because your are not doing 70 in a 60 only for them to find out that you are actually stuck behind a row of cars and they have nowhere to pull in.

On our local radio we get road traffic reports and they include any accidents

They could be involving motor cycle fatalities as last week, lorry turning over, cross over car accidents on M6,sheep,cows,horses Fathers for Justice on the carriageway/gantry etc etc.

Even cyclist/pedestrians mown down by mobile phone users are mentionned

If it a caravan in an accident then they say its a caravan

Are we being a tad defensive

Yes Paul, had this happen quite a few times coming home across the A66 on Saturday afternoon, trying to maintain 55/60mph on the duals and 50mph on the single carriage ways only to catch up with cars doing 40/45mph yes 40/45mph on the single roads, the looks I got when cars managed to get past me and then saw the cars in front (nuggets)

Hi John,

In short (which is unusual for me) YES

Now the longer bit, It was a rather rhetorical question, but it is difficult to deny that when caravans get into some difficlty it usully makes the reports and the fact it is a caravan is reported, when ther must be hundreds of other incidents of equal inconvenience that go unmentioned.

Nuff said!
