I have a thetford fridge fitted in my caravan. It keeps defrosting and warming up, although, the heat source (240v or Gas) continues to work. There is no sign the fridge has stopped working except when I notice the inside of the fridge is no longer cool and the food in the freezer defrosts. After a few days turned off if swithced on it will cool down and start to work again only to stop oooling and start to defrost again hours or a day later. What could cause such an odd fault? Can anyone help!!!!

Hello Kevin,

I am not familiar with the details of the Thetford range of fridges, but I do know they use the same absorption principal as the Electrolux ( Dometic).

The problem sounds like you may not have enough free air movement around the back of the fridge. You need this to take away the excess heat from the condensing coils on the back of the fridge. If it gets too hot, the refrigerant fluid cannot condense and the cooling cycle stops.

This may seem like a silly question, but do you have covers for the external flue and air intake? And if so have you removed them?

The other possibility I can think of is that your fridge may not have refrigerant fluid I its pipes. This is not a DIY job you would need to refer it to a fridge specialist.

Hi Kevin

We had exactly the same problem with the Thetford fridge in our 2006 Challenger,it would stop working after a couple of days and we would not notice until everything in the freezer had defrosted and we would not be able to use again until it had been turned off for a day or so.

Our dealer looked at it under warranty and replaced a circuit board as it had shown a fault.

when we used it for the first time after replacement it was still the same!.

We noticed that the problem was solved by only using the fridge on the first 3 temperature settings as shown on the led bars and it was plenty cold enough anyway.
