Have a new elddis 544 with a 12v switch near the door what is the procedure running the fridge when travelling.

I run my fridge for up to 24hrs before we set off to get up to temp (or is it down to temp) turn off green switch 240v hook up car cables and turn on red 12v switch, doing it like this for years and no problems but remember to lock your fridge door shut.

I take all that in but do i need the 12v switch near the door in down position?.Other caravan had a three way switch which was set in the central position.
