caravan help

Hi all i am new to the caravaning scene i have recently purchased a fleetwood colchester 1991 as my new project. It needs alot of work doing to it like damp upholstry curtains new seals but its all part of the fun. At present im trying to find a cheep re-upholstery company as the seating is very worn and i am also looking to purchase an awning for the van now this is where i get baffled. Can this van have an sort of awning on or does it have to be a particular make???
id be really grateful for any advise.
Thanks
Rachel

Hi Rachel, welcome to the Practical Caravan forum and good luck with your project caravan.
Some of our forum members have carried out repairs to rectify damp and I'm sure that they will offer advice about how to tackle it.
Your awning can be of any make but the sizing is important if you are considering a full awning rather than a porch awning.
To find out what size of awning you will need have a look at the diagram below.
measuring.jpg

Take a length of cord or string from ground level at point A, run it through the awning channel B to ground level point C.
Measure the length in centimetres and go up to the next unit of 10cms so if the awning measurement is 352 cms go to 360cms
This should provide your correct awning size if you are buying used.

and once you've decided on full, combi, porch or lightweight awning you'll need to decide on which make and frame to have as well!! Good Luck!

Sometimes you can get replacement seat cushions from a caravan breakers or ebay, some companies supply surplus cushions but beacause of the 'vans age and fleetwood being no longer trading this may prove difficult. loose or stretchy covers to go over the top may be an inexpensive option, rather than a full re-upholstery job. any materials used need to be flame retardent.

Hi Rachel
If you have'nt sorted out your van makeover I can recommend Tockfield in Derbyshire you can even use their site whilst they do your van. However makeover's are not cheap but if its done right its worth it. Good luck. Tockfield No is 01773 834968 e-mail sales@foam.co.uk web site www.foam.co.uk

Hi Rachel, If you live near me in the north west (lancs) I have a phone number somewhere for an upholstery place that do either new covering or replacements. Just let me know and i,lll find you the number. Good luck with your caravan project.

Welcome. Damp upholstery might mean a damp van. You may not know that this means water may be getting into the van through the body joints. You will need to put this right first. I have a friend who used tockfield and he was delighted. (He was an interior designer has high standards and is careful with his cash.) For your awning think about second hand preferably through a dealer. With awnings you get what you pay for but there can be good bargains. (We bought an Isabella porch for £350 used as opposed to over £800 new.) A full awning is easier to fit but takes longer. If you buy a porch check you will not foul any windows or vents. For a new awning search on line. There is one dealer who only adds about £50 to the wholesale cost to him.
Best of luck.
