Emergency SOS !! Having bought a new caravan at the NEC show in Feb, we are due to collect it at the end of May. However, we have tried the caravan and camping club and there are no courses available for manouvering until after this date. Can anyone give us any help/contacts etc for 1 day intensive courses which cover towing, parking, reversing etc please. We don't mind travelling if necessary, but CC suggested South Wales !!! A bit extreme for us for the day from Sheffield !

This may be a silly question but have you tried both the Caravan Club and the Caravan and Camping Club? I wasn't clear from your post that you've tried both clubs.

Alternatively I have no personal recommendations but a search on towing courses brought up lots of driving instructors, one near you in Macclesfield.

Good luck.

Hi Lisa

Down here in South Wales there is a school of motoring called Cats Eyes who offers these courses, may be there is a school of motoring close to yourself who offers similar courses.

Good Luck

I was also going to suggest try phoning around driving instructors. It's well worth the money to get some hands on, real road experience with a professional beside you. Alternatively, I did a full day manouvreing course at a college. It was only the one instructor with a group of 16 people, granted, but I got to drive 4-5 different vehicles and it's another string to your bow. Long shot, but maybe worth trying colleges?

As i passed my driving test after 97' i had to do a trailer test to be aloud to tow as after 97' the normal car driving licence doesnt include cat B+E just cat B.

I did mine through a local HGV driving school, it involved an intense 8 hours tuition then a 1 & a half hour driving test, it was great, tought me how to correctly couple up & do trailer checks, then do emergency stops & reversing, all of which i was already use to but it helps to be told by an instructor.

I cant help you on the price though as i didnt pay, the company i was working for did because my job involved towing heavy trailers, but im confident with towing & am about to teach my fiancee how to tow, she already has the old B+E as she passed her test before 97' & in my opinion everyone should have to pass a test to show they know what there doing as the length & weight of some outfits equal some lorries & you need the paperwork for those.

End of rant, hope that helps.

Try your local fire service training school .I work for merseyside fire service and i did a towing coarse with them two years ago so that the instructors could get some feed back from a experienced caravaner .Most fire service training schools offer training to industry and the private sector so it may just be worth a call or check the their web site.
