Many new caravans now come with a microwave fitted as standard and the one we have on order will have one too.

I love cooking, but have never used a microwave. I can see there may be times when it will come in handy, so tell me what's good to cook in one (and what's not!) All tips and advice very welcome.

Hi Mrs MoW

Our caravan (Abbey620) has a microwave fitted and we use it for making quick porridge for breakfast, it tells you on the box how to do it and the times etc. The only thing to watch out for with porridge is that it doesn't get to hot and boil over the top of the container, leaving a mess to be cleaned from inside the microwave, you have to keep your eye on it.

We also use it for heating quick ready meals, shepherds pie and that sort of thing, and it is useful for warming sausage rolls if we come back from the pub with friends.

Soup, rice pudding and anything like that is also an easy option.

Most packaged or tinned foods wil state whether it is microwaveable with warming or cooking times printed on the packaging. Make sure that the container that you use to microwave in is suitable for the purpose, tins and foil are a no no as are any metal objects.

We would never cook meats from raw in the microwave, and if you want to do poached eggs there are plastic containers sold in 'pound shops' that are suitable( I'm sure we've got one somewhere)

Our microwave is mounted on a level with the top lockers in the kitchen area, and as we are both of short stature we bought a little plastic step, again from a pound shop, which is useful and ensures that we lift hot food down to table level safely and without spillage.

One other thing to remember is that the food is still cooking when it is removed from the microwave so if you have heated up sausage rolls for instance you have to take care that the centre, in this case sausage, doesn't burn your mouth.

It's essential to make sure that food is properly cooked or warmed through, especially from frozen, apart from that it's quite simple, so enjoy the new caravan and the microwave.

Great for cooking jacket potatoes which would take too long in the gas oven alone. Cook the potatoes and then finish off in the oven to crisp the skins. It is generally thought that reheating pastry items are not too successful as the pastry can become soggy.A very useful piece of equipment to have though.

Hi all... when using the microwave do you have to turn any other electrical appliances off ,such as the heating or water heater in case of tripping the fuse.

We use our microwave all the time, both in the home and in the caravan. Great for use with Microwave meals readily available from Tesco's etc. A caravanning holiday is supposed to be relaxed after all. Why prepare meals when you can "pop one in the microwave"? I have no worries about cooking pretty much anything in the microwave, including raw meats. Used properly, it's a great device.

Thank you all for your detailed replies. I believe Lakeland do microwaveable containers, so I'll get some of those to start me off. Good tip about putting jacket potatoes in the oven to crisp up.

What are microwaves like for cooking fish?

I have a fitted microwave in our 'van, and I never use it! I would rather use the designated cupboard for something useful, like storage!

I hardly ever use a microwave at home, only for heating up a tin of baked beans or something similar, and I never cook meals in it either!

Hi Mrs Mow

Microwaves are great for cooking fish. Put the fish on a plate or container and cover with a piece of pierced cling film. A couple of minutes and it's done.

Thanks Chrissylizzie, that's good to know.

It will probably come with an instruction book that will start me off using it for the first time, so with that and the tips I've received, all should be well! As I mentioned, I enjoy cooking, but I'm sure a microwave will come in very handy sometimes.

Hi

For us, it's very useful - we have a 2 year old lady who requires things heating up quickly and efficiently.

It's also good for defrosting.

Also - if the chips/takeaway have cooled down somewhat from picking them up - they're quickly revived!

Hoorah!
