Hi, can anyone tell me whats going on with the prices of tading in your caravan? Dealers are given naf prices for trading in and yet they expect you to pay full book for a new one then you turn up at the dealers a week later to see your old caravan on the forecourt with a selling price of £2k to £3k more on the price you had for it? I know they need to make a bit of money on it but be realistic!

Susan, exactly the same as car trade ins, you get a rock bottom price from the dealer, then it goes on the forecourt at the "book" price.

Its called Supply and Demand, and second hand caravan prices are the best kept secret of our times!!

If you insure with the Caravan Club they will tell you the current valuation from Glass's guide.

By coincidence I had asked a dealer the week before I had spoken to the CC and I got the same answer.

Strange though, when you ask a dealer, they always disappear to some office then reappear some time later with bits of paper that they insist have your name written on it, and that you are not allowed to have to keep. All very odd and puts me off going into dealerships because they all appear so shady !

We sold ours privately - to the second buyer to view, bought in 1994, sold in 2000 - and lost very little on the deal (we purchased at a really good discount). We also then got a better discount on the model we were buying because 'you've no trade in'. It's always worth a try. We just put a notice in the window, parked it outside, and gave a printed sheet with full details to anyone who rang before inviting them to look around. There's a good market now in secondhand vans, because of the floods, so if you are selling then try privately first.
