As our van is coming up to a year old, and the dealer told us we must have it regulary serviced in order for the warranty to be valid, it is now time for its first service.

So last Thursday I took it to the dealership for its first service and for some warranty work to be carried out.

The cost of a service for a single axle is £163.00 inclusive of vat plus any parts and consumables used. The chap behind the counter told me that the total is usually about £190.00.

So talking to one of the lads in the workshop I was told that they are allowed 3 hours for a service from start to finish, and that the hourly rate we pay £41.00.

If you work it out thats £143.00 on labour and £20.00 is missing somewhere, bearing in mind they charge about £27.00 for bits etc. I asked what bits are used and he said on a new van like mine a couple of 1 shot nuts for the hubs and a tin of brake cleaning spray to clean the brakes, and a few squirts of grease on the over run and on the corner steadies. Basically thats it, of course they do the gas test, electric test and damp test and check the windows open and shut etc.

I was also informed that all this takes no more than a couple of hours and new vans are built so well these days that no more needs to be done.

So for £190.00 do you think thats value for money ? I'm still baffled as to where the other £47.00 has gone, plus there is my expense in getting the van there.

If I did'nt talk to the lads in the workshop I would be none the wiser.........

Danny we were under the impression that the dealer we bought the van off had to do the servicing but thats not so. If you have a local mobile caravan mechanic who is accredited they will come to your home and do it. It's also far cheaper because they haven't the overheads. The person we have, Mercia Mobile Caravans, will also carry out warranty work which he's allowed to do with the exception of big jobs like fitting front panels.

Last year I took my Bailey Discovery (A pretty Basic van) to a dealer 70 miles away from home, just because they could fit it in before we went away in it and before it went over the Bailey allowed period after the due service date. We payed

If you think you are being ripped off, then talk to Trading Standards.

When you book your service ask them for an itemised bill, and to do it on a 'time and materials' basis rather than a 'fixed price'. You can insist on monitoring he process by being there on site to check job times.

Technically if they charge you for 3 hours but only spend 1 hour on the job then that is fraud.
