Caravan servicing

Can someone please list what should be included in a service on a twin axle that is still under warranty? They don't service the gas appliances so how is a cost of approximately £250 justified? Also it is highly unlikely you will have damp problems etc, that is, if they check for damp.

Although my van is under warranty I am seriously considering having it done by a mobile professional for about £120. The excess that I would have paid over 3 years amounts to about £390 which would paid for any issues etc.

It must be remembered that if there was some sort of failure not associated with a service, i.e. damp, cupboard door falling to pieces, the problem should still be covere under warranty. Cars now days do not have to seviced by a franchise to hold their warranty.

As servicing costs are a bone of contention amongst the caravanning fraternity, it is a wonder that PC has not written an article about it. The article could define what should be done on a caravan service, the expected cost per hour and the number of hours on a service. Any warranty work shoudl be billed to the manufacturer and not the customer but somehow I don't think this happens.

Come on Alex, what about an investigation on behalf of all caravanners?

Ian, I would be extremely wary of not using an authorised dealer if your van is still under warranty. You do still need an annual damp inspection, if you do not then you could find yourself paying large amounts to get problems fixed. Everything on a caravan is expensive when bought from a dealership, their mark-up is astonishing, so if you damage say for example a cushion you could end up paying

Car manufacturers were forced by specific EC legislation to allow non-franchised outlets to service cars without affecting the warranty.

Caravans manufacturers have not yet been subject to such legislation although they should, in my opinion.

So, unfortunately, a caravan warranty would be void if the servicing is carried out by a non-franchise workshop. The provisions of the Sale of Goods Act still apply but that doesn't require any warranty to be given, just that the goods should be "of merchantable quality".

I think, Ian, you have to decide whether to pay the franchised dealer rate for servicing until the end of the warranty or accept that the warranty has ended if you have it serviced elsewhere. That may not be the choice you want but next time you purchase a new caravan you might want to negotiate differently.

It's certainly worth checking out the servicing cost, during warranty, of any item - it may alter your choice.
