Is this an indication that things are not going well on bookings and thus the earlier high prices just will not hold?

From one unfortunate that booked early but will not do so again!
 
It probably does, yes - last year 'tourism' crossings were down on all the ferry routes. There were also noticeably less British caravanners on all the sites we stayed at last year.

Quite often there are post-Christmas offers, but there were also some really good offers around October time, and I suspect there may be more at the NEC next week.
