At the recent superb Caravan Show at Earls Court my wife and I were very taken with the Dethleffs DL 540. However one thing concerns me the width! 2.3m/7'-6", the dealer assured us this is legal, if so why do UK manufactures stick to 2.23m/7'-4"?. Any comments would be very much appreciated also any owners views on Dethleffs.

Hi Graham

The width on the dethleffs is just on the limits of towing with a normal car any wider than this you have to use a commercial vehicle in this country.

I have a Adria Adora 532lt which is 2.292m wide you can really tell the difference in side these vans with the extra width you just have to be a little more careful when towing.

Hi Graham, just like Jon I to have a caravan that is 7'6" which is a lunar lexon. Bought it last week and towed it 220 miles with my old transit van. No probs at all and I was amazed how well it towed. Buy it you wong go wrong. By the way this was my first caravan and it was 7m long

the van is just on the limit for towing with a normal vehicle. you may want to consider though that it needs a wider gateway, some sites aren't geared up for wide vans etc etc

Go for it ... my family and I are very happy with our 1999-2000 Dethleffs 530, a fantastically well built van. Dethleffs have a habit of using all the right component's BPW, Hella, Truma to name but a few. Don't ask me why but Continental vans all come out at 2.30 metre's ... which your dealer is right in saying is legal up to and including 2.30 metres - (legal for towing vehicles under 3.5 t solo) The difference between them is in old money just over an inch each side !!
